Getting Started Induction training: Executive Committee members

Getting Started training involves completing four short modules designed to introduce you to your role and to Scouting. Topics covered include safeguarding, Scouting values, risk, General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), and also the tools to start you planning for the future.

Three of the modules are online and at the end of each module you can print off a certificate, or save it to your computer, to show to your Induction Mentor or Group Scout Leader (GSL) as evidence of completion.

Module 1:  Essential information

This module contains basic information that all adults involved in Scouting need to know, including: how we do it; child protection; safety; and risk. It’s a simple informative module (approx 45 mins) and is completed via online e-learning:

Modules 3 or 4:  Tools for the role

These modules supply leaders with the resources required to run a section or Group. Module 3 is for section leaders and module 4 is for managers, eg: GSLs. You need only do the one that is relevant to your role (approx 1 hour).

Once you have completed these modules, your Training Advisor (TA) will be in contact to take you through your personal learning plan.

GDPR module

GDPR training is a mandatory online module for ALL appointments. It covers the basic information that individuals need to know in relation to GDPR, what this means for their role and for Scouting, and how to effectively align with it.  Link to GDPR module

Module 2:  Your Personal Learning Plan (PLP)

To support you in your role The Scout Association provides ongoing training that builds upon your existing skills, knowledge and experience. The training you will receive will depend on your appointment and is intended to give you additional skills and knowledge to ensure that you carry out your role to the best of your ability.

Your TAs role is to discuss our adult training scheme with you in more detail; help you identify where you have prior experience or learning that can be used; outline the modules you need to complete; and what training is available is to do this. This will all be recorded in your PLP (which constitutes module 2 of Getting Started).

Once you have completed the Getting Started modules your full appointment will be confirmed. Initially your appointment will be in place for one year. When your first year is complete, you will have the opportunity to confirm with your volunteer manager that you are happy to continue, feel supported, and able to access and progress with the training.
