Volunteering as a Young Leader (14-18 year olds)

We warmly welcome young people to join our volunteer teams.  They may be DofE volunteers, those who have come up through Scouting or individuals who are looking to support their local community.

Young Leaders are aged between 13.5yrs and 18 who volunteer with Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts or Scouts.

They are key members of the leadership teams, involved in planning programmes, running activities and making sure the kids have a great time.

As a DofE volunteer you do not sit within the young leader unit and are able to volunteer only for the length of time required by the Award. For Bronze this is 3 months, Silver it is 6 months and Gold is 12 months. After this time, if the volunteer wishes to continue then they must convert to becoming a Young Leader as part of an Explorer Unit.

A series of training modules and missions, are available to support the Young Leaders in their role. They are optional to complete, apart from the important Module A which needs to be completed within 3 months of their start date. DofE Volunteers also only need to complete Module A.

Young Leaders are automatically part of the Explorer Scout section (age 14-18yrs), and can get involved with Explorer Scout Units if they wish. The Units put on activities just for their age group. The time volunteered as a Young Leader counts towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
