Explorers embark on wellbeing Odyssey with fitness experts

30 Explorers from Purley-on-Thames and Pangbourne were granted exclusive access to Odyssey Group Fitness in Reading on Thursday for a special evening centred on wellbeing, health, and exercise.

The energetic Explorers were introduced to the importance of a balanced exercise programme by Odyssey Group Fitness owner Louise Field and team member Nita Huang, who coached the teenagers through a carefully designed exercise class.

The session, which replicated the style of Odyssey’s tailored classes, allowed the Explorer Scouts to understand exercise techniques and best practice.

“We were delighted to welcome the Purley and Pangbourne Explorers to Odyssey to give them an insight into how to develop a balanced exercise routine,” said Louise Field.

“It’s important for young people to understand not only what they can do in a gym setting but critically what not to do. It’s not just about lifting weights or flexing muscles; this is about supporting their physical and mental wellbeing through exercise and focusing on technique.”

Explorer Lead Volunteer Richard said: “We know our Explorers, like a lot of young people, take part in sport, physical recreation and many go to the gym, so we wanted them to get expert advice from industry specialists who recognise the importance of a structured and balanced programme. At Scouts, we promote skills for life – and this means equipping our young people with the right attitudes and approaches. We’re grateful to Odyssey Fitness Group for sharing their expertise with our Explorers.”

Louise added: “We’re a community that caters for all levels. Every odyssey starts with the smallest of first steps, and it was a pleasure to offer our insight to the Scouts to get them on their fitness and wellbeing journey.”

Explorer Erin, said: “Our visit to the gym with Explorers was a great introduction to using a gym and its equipment properly, and doing it with friends made it a really fun session.”

Explorer Zachary, added: “This was my first visit to any kind of gym properly and it was interesting to understand about the techniques involved and the importance of a balanced training programme.”
