Update Sheet for all Groups from Peter Scurry County Adviser Special Needs January 2007
Support for Groups
Scouting helps to provide a good start in
life for all young people - whatever their circumstances. There are
those who have special needs and Scouting aims to integrate these
youngsters into their local Scout Groups.
Throughout Berkshire there are many young people with a wide variety of special needs enjoying the game of Scouting. Leaders always need to take into account the abilities of their members when planning their programme. Clearly it is not possible to arrange for every individuals special needs, or particular interests, to be accommodated at all times.
The programme will depend on a number of issues, both for the Leaders and the individuals. The Leaders will need to know of any conditions which must be taken into account when planning the programme of Scouting activities for their Group. Those wishing to join Scouting should approach their local Scout Group and discuss their particular circumstances with the Leaders.
Many alternatives can be arranged to ensure that all young people can enjoy Scouting in the company of their peers. The scope of activities and flexibility in Scouting can be arranged to allow most young people to gain from the many character forming experiences.
If you wish to discuss the potential in Scouting for any young person
with special needs then please contact the

Pang Valley Scoutlink
A fundamental requirement of membership is an understanding of the Scout Law and Promise. This is the basis of Scouting and is deemed to be the criteria for membership. Some of those with learning difficulties may not be able to fully understand the guidance given by the Law and Promise and may need extra help.
In Berkshire we have a Scoutlink Group specially set up to cater for young people with learning difficulties who would not be comfortable in their local Scout Group. This group meets once a month on a Saturday in Tilehurst, Reading. Anyone wishing to know more about the Pang Valley Scoutlink Group should contact the Group Scout Leader: Sue Clarkson.
