Did someone say Biscuits?

Beavers from across South East Berks attended the annual District Fun Day at Earleywood on Sunday 4th July. The theme for the day was ‘Where in the World’

The Beavers spent the afternoon travelling the globe. They travelled to Japan for a lesson in origami; made a bridge to cross the Amazon River; travelled through the Egyptian pyramids before hunting for wildlife in Kenya and for creepy crawlies in the jungle.

They camped out in an African hut whilst wearing traditional clothing and smashed crockery in Greece, with the obligatory Greek dancing thrown in for good measure. After a brief stop at the NASA space centre to fly rockets, they returned home to Earleywood for a well earned rest and snack.

S E Berks District Beaver Challenge and Sleepover

On 8th May 2010 eleven teams took part in the S E Berks District Beaver Challenge, held at Earleywood.

Throughout the afternoon each team was set a number of tasks - Pairing opposites, Rush hour game, Welly throwing, answering quiz questions and building a tower strong enough to sustain an earthquake to name but a few.

Nineteen Beavers from three groups stayed on after the Challenge to enjoy their second event of the day – The Annual S E Berks District Beaver Sleepover.

The Beavers enjoying parachute games, a wide game and generally letting of some steam before enjoying a fish and chip supper. OK, so most of the Beavers had sausages or chicken nuggets, but the adults enjoyed the fish anyway.

We then had a camp-fire sing song ending with some yummy toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate.

9 o'clock and time for bed although not straight to sleep. A bedtime story was of course the order of the day.

The following morning, after a breakfast of Croissants and juice, the Sleepover ended with a Closing ceremony. Parents looked on as the Colony Flags were paraded, and badges and certificates were given out. They were also entertained with a short song from the Beavers

Around the year in 24 hours

Balloon games, the bang of party poppers, shouts of Happy New Year and a chorus of Auld Lang Syne marked the beginning of our sleepover. Housekeeping details out of the way the journey through the year continued with Mardi-Gras celebrations. The Beaver Scouts decorated masks with sequins, jewels and feathers in readiness for the parade and salsa dancing. They also made garters, complete with bells and ribbons as they progressed to late spring and May Day. Wearing the garters we went to the park and enjoyed maypole dancing before settling down to a summer picnic. Sports day followed, suitably finishing with the award ceremony. Medals were presented to the winners of the egg and spoon, three-legged, sack and relay races. With summer fading into autumn, the Beavers thought about what harvest time reminded them of and drew pictures to show this before they set off on the Harvest Trail. This was a game that led them around the building finding harvest items in order. The year was coming to the final quarter. Enjoying the fun of Halloween and Bonfire night, the Beavers made spiders, went apple bobbing, made Catherine wheels and waved sparklers before settling around the campfire for singing and hot dogs. The poem, ‘The Night before Christmas’ marked bedtime. After hanging up their stockings, the Beavers settled into bed and watched a DVD as they drifted into sleep. Waking up on Christmas morning the fun continued with breakfast complete with crackers; party games and of course, the stockings which had been filled!

The picture shows 13th Maidenhead Beavers enjoying the Maypole dance.

1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scout Group have just received the delivery of a new Fire Circle on behalf of Leaders, Parents and a local land owner, the re-construction of the old Fire Circle took place over the weekend of the 17th and 18th April, the work was hard, but made easier by the offer of a Parent who supplied and operated their large digger, the team were spoilt over the weekend by support of 2 Scout Leaders providing the food and cream teas in the afternoons,
The new Fire Circle is a huge improvement on the old one which had out lived its time within the large Scout Group and had become too small to accommodate 3 Beaver Colonies, 3 Cub Packs, 3 Scout Troops and 1 Explorer Unit,
The Group are now planning their official opening with the local community and local officials on the 26th June,

With help from the local branch of the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain, the Cubs found out more about the bells and put together their own performance.

The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain was formed in 1967 to promote, teach, loan instruments, run rallies and have an exceptional handbell orchestra. Handbells are an instrument that require team work and works particularly well in helping those who don't normally get along. They have to listen to each other to produce the music.

In addition to the candidate members and the four Jamboree Unit leaders, the weekend brought in the assistance of an adult team from across the county including former Jamboree Unit leaders, in order to support the leader team in their selection process.

Sandhurst Scout Receives Queen's Scout Award

Katherine Walpole age 16, an Explorer Scout from Sandhurst and a pupil at Ranelagh School in Bracknell, was presented with her Queen’s Scout award on stage at the South East Berkshire Gang Show after Wednesday night’s Show. The Queen’s Scout award is the highest award achievable by a Scout and it was presented to her by Hamish Stout, Berkshire’s County Commissioner.
Some of the many activities that she undertook to gain the award were, planning and carrying out an 80K hike over 4 days in Lancashire and Yorkshire, working as a volunteer assistant helping disabled young people and being a Young Leader for her local Beaver Colony (1st Sandhurst).
In 2007 Katherine represented Sandhurst, and was one of only 5 Scouts from South Berkshire District, at the World Scout Jamboree in Essex celebrating Scouting’s Centenary year. There were over 38,000 Scouts at the event representing 158 Countries.
To recognise the achievement of this award Katherine has been invited to attend the St Georges Day Parade at Windsor Castle in April by the Queen.

Gang Show a Great Success

This years South East Berks Gang Show was another huge success. It was on at the Wilde Theatre all last week culminating with two shows on Saturday. Around 100 kids were on stage each night playing to a full house.
We were raising money for CLAPA, The Cleft Lip and Palate Association. Established in 1979, CLAPA is the only UK Charity providing relief and support for all those born with, or affected by cleft lip and pallet. CLAPA provides support beyond the walls of the hospital and ensures that in partnership with the health specialists, all the needs of those with, and affected by, cleft lip and pallet are catered for.
A total of £800 was raised by the show and a cheque was presented by Shirley Burns, the show’s producer, to Sue Carroll, CLAPA’s representative.

The fun begins at Arborfield!

Over 30 adults and young people got a taste of Scouting at the hugely sucessful taster session for the new Beaver Colony in Arborfield earlier in February.

The young people enjoyed a fun packed session run by local leaders and supported by members of wider Scouting while their parents and relatives found out more about the fun of Scouting and how they could be involved in getting the project off the ground.

The response from the adults was as enthusiastic as that of the young people and should see the new section on a firm footing for the future.

Thanks must go to the Coombes school for their continued support and letting us take over the hall and class room for the evening as well as the team of voluteers who put together a great evening for adults and young people alike. The whole event is another example of the continued appeal of Scouting and the value of working with other organisations.

Alain, a qualified coach from Reading Fencing Club, agreed to help out and teach our new Scout group some fencing! We started with the basics, moved on to round robin fencing and finished with a game of Roundheads and Cavaliers; a bit of a free for all. Though it was a little unfair, the Scouts were given two weapons! We all had a great evening and the Scouts were clamouring for more in our troop forum the very next week!

Jack Wows GSLs' Day Conference

Jack Harley-Walsh, a scout in South Ascot, shared his special brand of magic with over 120 GSLs and similar roles from across Berkshire.

Having persuaded his mum Sue to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya and Mt Meru, Jack set off on the journey of a lifetime and summoned his courage to overcome any obstacle. Such determination is inspirational and both Jack and Sue shared just a part of their adventure with us.

Summing up his philosophy as "Don't give up on yourself" and his founding principles as Fun, Courage and Challenge; Jack is passionate about helping other young people through his fundraising efforts for Sebastian House and the Air Ambulance. A truly remarkable young man!

Jack Gets Gold!

Our Chief Scout Bear Grylls has said that some Scouting events are not just ‘ordinary’ activities, they are “extra ordinary” and today we hear of some of your extraordinary achievements in obtaining your Silver Awards.
As well as the Chief Scout’s Silver Award Presentations today, we have another award that is for an “extra” extra ordinary activity.

Jack Harley-Walsh, a cub at 1st South Ascot, decided that he wanted to do something that was “extra ordinary”. He sometimes finds schooling challenging, but wanted to show that you don’t have to be super kid to do extra ordinary things. He set his challenge to climb some mountains, but not just any mountains but the highest mountains he could in Africa.

To make it more interesting Jack decided to seek sponsorship for two important charities. The Sebastian Action Trust set up by young Sebastian Gates who was 7 and diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Through his own experiences Sebastian sought ways to make life better for others facing an uncertain future. Jack thought this was an excellent project to support along with supporting the Thames Valley Air Ambulance Service who Jack also felt does a fantastic job.

So, along with his Mum in tow, they set off to Africa for three weeks and climbed three mountains: Mount Meru - 15,000 feet; Mount Kilimanjaro - 19,000 feet – the highest mountain in Africa; Mount Kenya -17,000 feet.

Jack, aged 10, was the youngest person ever to climb Mount Kilimanjaro !! For a treat after his great achievement his Mum treated Jack to a Safari in Kenya to see the wild animals.

It was there that catastrophe struck !! Jack, whilst riding a camel; fell off and had to be airlifted by an air ambulance to hospital in Nairobi where he remained for a week to recover from his fall. He certainly knows what service an air ambulance can provide now, and is even more delighted he chose this service as one of his charities to support.

Jack, “Well Done”. A terrific challenge. A fantastic achievement for someone aged 10. You are a wonderful inspiration to us all. I am delighted to tell you that you have been awarded a very rare Award and Hamish Stout our County Commissioner will present it to you a “GOLD” Blue Peter Badge.

How does a Beaver Scout end up looking like this?

At a recent meeting, the Beaver Scouts of 1st Twyford's Riverbank colony enjoyed a busy programme. They started by decorating fairy cakes to look like spiders, complete with green icing and liquorice legs. This was followed by a spot of apple dunking - or in some cases voluntary partial drowning. Unfazed by wet jumpers, hair and faces they followed this by finding marshmallows buried in icing sugar. A certain recipe for fun and mayhem! After a wash and some energetic games it was time to go home with big smiles and apologies to their parents for the messy uniforms.

Reading Central District Explorers activity weekend

The weekend of 16th-18th October saw Reading Central District Explorers (open to all Berkshire, though surprisingly few took up the offer) visit the Peak District for some climbing, caving and hill-walking.

Glenbrook Girl Guide Centre, in the Hope Valley was the chosen campsite, where the advance party 'enjoyed' putting up a large mess tent in the dark (OK, we had torches) before the Explorers arrived and we all pitched our hike tents. Saturday saw some of the group caving in Carlswark Cavern (Middleton Dale), whilst the rest climbed nearby. During the caving trip we met some Leicestershire Scouters, one of whom kindly took the attached photo (thanks Robin!). No-one wanted to cave in the afternoon (not sure why - the morning trip wasn't that wet or muddy!) so the whole party went climbing at High Neb on Stanage Edge. Dinner was a delicious choice of spicy chicken or beef fajitas.

Sunday split the party again with three intrepid Explorers braving Giants Hole (just the other side of Winnats Pass), while the rest opted for a stroll around the nearby Tors. The caving trip included a 7m ladder climb down into the impressive Garlands Pot, 256m from the entrance, whilst being sprayed with water from the waterfall that flows into the pot. We ventured about 100m into the aptly-named "Crabwalk" before time constraints meant we had to head back to the surface. Back at the campsite, after a lunch of hot dogs and cheese & biscuits, it was time to strike camp and journey back home. Thanks to Ian Kirkham for organising the weekend.

International Meeting with Leverkusen Scout Leaders

As a result of Bracknell being twinned with Leverkusen, near Cologne, Germany, a firm link has now been made between the Leverkusen and Bracknell Scouts. This is happening through 3rd Sandhurst to start with since Fred Jones has linked his own interests in the Twinning Association and his scout Group! The first joint international meeting in the process of arranging joint camps and other activities was recently successfully undertaken by a team from 3rd Sandhurst, Richard Price and Peter Forbes.

Eleven Leverkusen Scout and Cub leaders from the Orion Group came for a three day visit, camping at Earleywood in their black tent. On arrival they where treated to a traditional English Fish and Chip supper. For their troop night 3rd Sandhurst Scouts joined with the Germans and worked together to build a good sized campfire and shared songs around it. Maybe not the most ambitious programme in the world but it more than achieved the aim of bringing the two groups together.

The main event for the meeting was a guided minibus tour of Bracknell and the surrounding area, hosted by Leaders and supporters from 3rd Sandhurst. The tour included Runways End Campsite, Horseshoe Lake, 3rd Sandhurst HQ and the many attractions Bracknell has to offer. The day and indeed the visit was rounded off with a meal together before we waved Auf Wiedersehn to our new friends.

As a result of our meeting a date has been set for a party of Scouts to come from Leverkusen to camp at Earleywood at the beginning of the summer holidays. The aim is to have Scouts from 3rd Sandhurst and District camp with them for a few days and share Scouting activities. The remainder of their time will be spent visiting attractions locally, in Windsor and in London.

Thank you to Freddie, Howard, Carol, Goof, Olivia, Peter and Richard for all their efforts in getting this international project off the ground.

Brenda, GSL, 3rd Sandhurst

Pinkneys Green Scouts - Taking Part in JOTI & JOTA

Pinkneys Green Scouts took part in the 13th Jamboree on the Internet The object was to use the Internet to communicate with Scouts around the world. We used, Internet chat, Web site browsing and E-mail to exchange with Scouts in countries all over the world (Over 200 Countries were taking part) we didn‟t make contact with all the countries but we did manage to talk to, contact and with Scouts from a lot of foreign countries some of which were, New Zealand, Australia and the USA. It was an impressive feeling when you were actually looking at and chatting with Scouts from the other side of the world!
During the same weekend we also took part in 52nd Jamboree on the Air PG to join the annual Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA), using Amateur Radio our special call sign GB0PG. For JOTA gave us all the opportunity to talk to other Scout Groups around the world - just like a real Jamboree but without the travelling! A local team of Radio Amateurs, set up a number of stations at our Scout Hall and we made some very interesting contacts during the weekend. We have been able to talk to stations as far away as USA, Canada as well are all over Europe

Other Cubs, Scouts & Leaders from Scout Groups in Maidenhead joined us.

2nd Thatcham travelled to West Wittering by coach, minibus, and car arriving onsite at 10am. The boys and girls and most of the adults were soon on the beach playing and as can be seen from the pictures made a huge sand castle. The chief engineer and construction expert was Gavin Davis. The weather for the day was warm with sunny intervals. The sea was very cold but this didn't deter everybody from having a dip. Sadly the day was soon over and we had to return to Thatcham. The trip was such a success it will be back next year!

South Berkshire Beaver Fun Day

86 Beavers and assorted leaders, helpers and parents came along to Earleywood camp site for a day of fun on Sunday June 7th.

We were VERY lucky with the weather and just got cleared away before the rain came.

There were about 20 bases for the children to visit including crate stacking (always a queue) tent erecting, making (and eating) edible bugs and face painting, another favourite.

A huge worm was found during the bug hunt, we lit fires, made kites, and meteors. I witnessed a meteor shower after lunch!

We learnt how to follow tracking signs left by Shere Khan and some of the leaders were caught having a go at some of the bases too.

We finished the afternoon with a camp fire. We didn’t get to sit down for long though as they had us up doing actions. Some of the leaders seemed to be enjoying it as much as the children.

2nd Bracknell Scouts - Back to Basics Camp

In early June 14 Scouts from 2nd Bracknell attended the second annual Back to Basics camp at Walton Firs in Surrey. This camp which is st to become part f the annual calendar is for new and less experienced campers to learn basic camping skills from the older more experienced Scouts. In doing this Scouts take part in several activities to complete either their Outdoor or Outdoor Plus Challenge.

Camping in a wooded area of Walton Firs, activities included many basic camping skills such as; Tent Pitching, Fire Lighting; Backwoods Cooking, Pioneering, Hiking, Camp First Aid and just for fun the famous Walton Firs Obstacle Course.

Sadly, unlike last years, the weather was forecasted to be pretty wet, but with the exception of Sunday morning no activity was rained off and at least the rain made for a pretty spectacular and muddy obstacle course!

It was an extremely enjoyable camp for, made all the more special when reluctant Scouts found the muddy obstacle course so enjoyable they had to go round 4 or 5 times.

Over the bank holiday weekend, 35 cubs from 21st Maidenhead Cubs (21 from Colin Barton Pack and 14 from John Williams Pack) attended camp at Walter Davis Scout Camp Site in Stoke Poges. For the first time in three years they had brilliant weather, which made for an excellent camp. The Cubs took part in the on site aerial runway, a 100ft plastic sheet covered in soapy water for body sliding, a 2 hour off site hike to earn the Hikers Badge. Three other badges were covered, and we had lots of first time campers earning their campers badge, as well as adding to their Nights Away totals. Some over come their fear of the dark and one overcome a fear of heights on the the zip wire. It was a really fun camp and the best bit was seeing 35 happy faces from start to finish.

Safari Sleepover

Beaver Scouts from 13th Maidenhead went on safari last Friday. After identifying animals, they made a shield, spear and binoculars, before donning their camoflage jackets, and heading for the local nature reserve. There they hunted for signs of ten animals, identifying them by their footprints. Returning to Base Camp the Beavers were assisted by the Scouts in erecting their tents for the night. After that they tucked into vulture eggs, golden nuggets of giraffe dung, cheesy snakes, jungle leaves and all kinds of other exciting goodies, only found on Beaver safari! Tummies full, the brave adventurers were ready to undertake the crocodile alley trail. Loaded with sleeping bag, rucksack and map they found their way through the quicksand, poisonous vines, bat cave, crocodile swamp, piranha pond and spider nests. Making it back to camp the Beavers were happy to settle around the camp fire and make music with their jungle drums and sing songs. The evening finished with hot chocolate and cookies and the film, The Lion King, before turning in for the night.

Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scouts Canal Weekend

Patrol and Assistant Patrol Leaders from Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scout Group took part in a training day aboard the Falcon Adam canal boat. During the weekend the Scouts learnt how to run a canal boat, operate the locks and bridges, and how to work as a team. The purpose of the weekend was for the Scouts to develop their team leading capabilites and work together effectively whilst participating in an adventurous activity.

The Scouts navigated the Falcon Adam from Aldermaston Lock to Newbury, then returned the following day along the same route. The course of the Kennet to Avon Canal went through 12 locks and 6 swing bridges. No Scouts got wet and the weather was sunny and warm. A great day was had by all who attended!

Bluebell Survival Camp

The Falcon Scout Troop from 1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scouts took part in a Bluebell Survival camp for the weekend. The group met at the HQ and spent a couple of hours preparing their route to hike, with all their kit to Butlers Farm near Silchester. The farmer had kindly agreed to let us camp in his untouched bluebell woods. After a few hours hiking all the scouts arrived. They then set about building their shelters for the night and getting a fire going. A stew and spit roast chicken were cooked over the open fire, followed by chocolate filled bananas and appls. The scouts and leaders then settled around their fires before sleeping under the stars. An early rise, cooked sausages the site was cleared. There was a hike back to Mortimer station and back home for a shower!
The scouts all had a great weekend, back to basics with nothing but what they carried to site - the sun was shining and a lovely wood to sleep in.

There’s a great opportunity for the local business community to enjoy a relaxed golf tournament, network with like-minded entrepreneurs and support scouting locally when South Berkshire Scouts hold their annual Golf Gala on May 29th this year.

Now in its sixth year, the Golf Gala takes place at the fantastic East Berks course in Crowthorne, a stunning setting for a day’s golf followed by a great lunch and hearty celebrations!

With teams of four paying only £70 per player, which includes breakfast and a 2 course lunch, there’s no better way to spend a Friday in May. All the details of how to enter are on the Golf Gala website www.Scouts-Golf.co.uk.

If you are a local business and would like to sponsor a prize or donate an auction item it need not be a hefty investment but will raise your profile in the community via this well publicised event. See the website for more information.

Cubs Steam towards Personal Safety Badge

Last weekend, Cubs from 3 groups within the Kennet District, took part in a railway day that they aptly named ‘Steam’. All the Cubs and their Leaders travelled by train to Swindon where they spent the day exploring the Swindon Steam Museum exploring the Engines and Carriages on display and hearing about the history of the Great Western Railway, they combined this with a visit to the current Swindon signal box to see how the modern day network is organised and how trains are safely routed around our area.

One of the main focuses of the day for the Cubs was to learn and understand about safety on trains and in railway stations, all part of their Personal Safety badge. This badge is sponsored by Serco with the British Transport Police and the Transport Police arranged to have two officers to meet the Cubs at Reading train station and talk to them about safety on and around railway lines.

All the Cubs had an enjoyable and educational day and wish to thank the British Transport Police, National Rail and First Great Western for their part in making this joint Pack venture a great success.

1st Binfield Pond Clearance

On chilly and damp afternoon on Sunday January 25th 2009, a group of Scouts from the 1st Binfield Group went some way to contributing to their Community Challenge by helping out in a much needed pond clearance exercise. Co-ordinated by the local Bracknell Community Ranger, the Scouts undertook 3 tasks – clearing the highly overgrown pond and the surrounding area; cutting down some of the saplings that had grown up (coppicing) and then re-weaving a woven hedge with coppiced hazel – all hard work!

Tools were provided by the ranger, Marie-Anne Phillips, along with gloves and waders and everyone got stuck in immediately, rotating tasks every now and again, and all the Scouts and the leaders/parents who came along too, had a very enjoyable afternoon, helped by the mid-way break of fizzy drinks, coffee and biscuits!

You would be surprised at what a few hours of concentrated effort and enthusiastic Scouts can achieve, and Farley Copse looks a much better place for it. Thanks Scouts!

Loddon District Cooking Competition

Twyford Scout HQ was the venue for this year's Loddon District Cooking Competition. 9 teams of 3 or 4 Scouts from around the District planned a 3 course menu based on a theme of Healthy Eating. The meal had to be prepared on equipment found in a basic camp marquee kitchen - a 2 ring gas or petrol stove (with grill if required), 1 large dixie (1 gallon pot), a nest of billies plus all the necessary utensils/chopping boards/cleaning stuff etc. No electrical equipment of any sort is allowed. Oh, and a budget of £18 maximum per team!

Once the kitchens were set up the Scouts were introduced to the judges. John Sinnerton, the head chef from Burratas @ The Royal Oak, Ruscombe was kindly 'loaned' for the afternoon, aided by a local Cub leader and a Guider from Charvil. Having a professional chef there added to the experience for the Scouts - John offered tips and advice, a bit of 'food first aid' as well as general encouragement. The judging job was not an easy one; apart from going back and forth with tasting fork in hand, they also had to mark the teams on hygiene, teamwork and planning, theme, table layout and correct use of cutlery/cruets and so on. 2 hours later, after their final deliberations, the team from 5th Woodley Grenfell came third, 1st Woodley Forest second and just ahead were 1st Twyford Polehampton. Twyford's winning combination was a poached egg set in a toasted muffin to start, a prawn & tuna crunchy 'bake' with sweet potato and red onion mash accompanied by fine beans for the main dish, followed by fresh fruit kebabs with creme fraiche dips, all on a well laid out table.

Twyford now go on to represent the District (and defend their title), along with 1st Woodley, in the Berkshire County competiton later this month at 3rd Upton HQ in Slough.

PL & APL Training Weekend

Since opening a 2nd Scout Troop at 1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scouts we have spent several months selecting new PLs and APLs. To help with their development 8 PLs and APLs spent the weekend at Braggers Wood Campsite in the New Forest. During the weekend there were a number of classroom based sessions where we discussed the roles of a PL, how best to run the troop and agree some ground rules. Saturday afternoon was spent learning about axes, knives and saws, fire making and then cooking various different receipes on the open fires. This included chickens, fish and bannanas full of chocolate!

After some map reading training the Scouts were dropped at a remote location in the dark and had to hike back to the Scout Camp. This was sucessfully navigated and everyone was safely home by 2am. Sunday morning was a bit of a struggle, there was a mini PL council and the clearing of the hut, but done as a project. As we were so close to the sea we had to go and visit, on arriving at Keyhaven the heavens opened but everyone was determined and made a dash for the sea, a quick photo then back to the cars.

Overall a great weekend was had by the Scouts and Leaders. The PLs & APLs learnt some new skills, got to work as a team and the leaders got to see their strenghts and areas to help develop over the coming terms. We have a further number of these weekends lined up for the coming year.

Fourteen teams of local business men and women came together for a four-ball Stapleford competition, and later enjoyed a Presentation Luncheon, including a raffle and auction.

Chairman of the organising committee, Howard de Silva, said “Once again, we found the course, facilities and staff at Wokefield Park first class, and I know that all our players much appreciated this. The weather was glorious, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. With a great deal of financial support from local commerce and industry, especially from Thames Valley Windows, our Principal Sponsor, the event raised a magnificent £3000.”

This year’s winning team (photo above) was captained by Barrie Horsted of Afton Chemicals in Bracknell, whose team played a cracking round. However, competition was fierce, and a number of teams were close runners up. Details of the event, together with a large selection of photographs taken during the day, can be found at www.scouts-golf.co.uk. The organisers are already taking enquiries of interest into next year’s event, and these may also be sent via the website.

Peace Light in Reading

A Cub Scout and a Scout from the 3rd Reading (St. Peters, Caversham) Scout Group delivered the International Peace Light to St Peters Church during the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The Peace Light which was lit on the 22nd November at the place believed to be the birth place of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem travelled to Austria and then via France to England. Since arriving in Austria the light has reached not just the UK but a total of 23 European countries plus the USA and Mexico. The Peace Light from Bethlehem campaign started in 1986 as part of a charitable relief mission prompted by a large number of poor and needy children in upper Austria. Since that time, with a great deal of co-operation, the Scouts and Guides around the World have formed a distribution network attempting to bring the message of Peace to as many people as possible by delivering the Peace Light to churches, old peoples? homes, hospitals, prisons, places of cultural and political importance More information about the International Peace Light may be found at www.peacelight.org.uk

Start of the adventure for the WIllow Beaver Scout Colony

14th November 2008 was a great day for 1st Finchampstead as we invested the 14 founder members of the new Willows Beaver Colony. The Colony started in September 2008 and has been running a successful programme every Saturday morning led by Jo Allum and her team of leaders. All the Beavers are new to Scouting so we decided to give them a flavour of Beavers before we went to the stage of investing them. The Scouts came down to run the programme for the meeting while the leaders were able to focus on preparing for the investiture. The weather was great so much fun was had in the country park following a tracking trail that the Scouts had set up and also trying to find some hidden Patrol Leaders. The Beaver Scouts then experienced a 'red carpet' moment as we went outside to take numerous photographs with an array of cameras and then they quickly devoured refreshments of doughnuts, biscuits and Juice. A great day for the new colony at the start of the their fabulous adventure in Scouting.

For the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) Great Bedwyn and 1st Hungerford Scout Troops teamed up with Newbury & District Amateur Radio Society. This was an opportunity to contact Scouts around the world. There was lots to do with Scouts talking on the microphone, looking up locations of other stations in the atlas and recording communications in the radio log. They were able to contact 33 other stations, mainly around Europe and a couple further afield. Next year they plan to hold a weekend-JOTA-camp and reach the four corners of teh world without leaving Berkshire.

South Berks Cubs make a difference in their communities

Cub Packs from South Berks turned out to do a good turn for their local community, using the occasion as a step towards their Community award. At the 9th Bracknell both Cub Packs, Beavers, Scouts, Leaders and parents and friends joined the Birch Hill and Hanworth Community Liaison Group to carry out a massive litter pick around the area local to their HQ. They were joined by Hilary Hyslop, the local PCSO, and Marie-Ann Philips, from Bracknell Forest Ranger Service. After 2 hours of work they had gathered 5 separate loads of rubbish that were taken away by Bracknell Council. At Great Hollands School 9 Cubs and leaders from 2nd Easthampstead were clearing leaves from a garden area and digging the borders to make the area more useable for the children at the school. 2nd Crowthorne Cubs, leaders and parents turned out to plant 500 wild daffodils along the banks near Dickie?s Pond at Pinewood, where they have their HQ. Dickie Dove had been someone who had put many years of service into the Pinewood site and will now be remembered in a more visual way. Congratulations to all those who have made this Community Day a chance to put back something into the area that we meet. Other Cub Scout Packs are already planning events for early next year.

Hungerford Scouts on the Isle of Wight

We travelled by ferry to the island, and after setting up camp at Corf Scout Campsite we went on a fishing trip on a boat in the Solent. We took the fish we caught back to the campsite and gutted and campfired them and ate them. Later that evening the Scouts built bivouacs in which some of them slept overnight. On Sunday we went on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and then we had a short hike from the railway to 'Headhunters', an outdoor laser-quest activity, where the Scouts beat a whole load of adults 3-0 at their own game! The IOW camp was a brilliant weekend which packed a lot of activities into a very short time. Our thanks to 1st Wash Common Cromwell from whom we pinched the idea!

Well done to all the Cub Scouts who turned up for their allocated slot and brushed and cleaned so enthusiastically.
Beaver Scouts from the 13th Maidenhead Colony became Knights for their recent sleepover. Making costumes that included a tabard, helmet, sash, sword and shield they ventured forth to the local park in a hunt for the Holy Grail and a quest to Save the Princess. Returning to their castle it was time to partake of a medieval banquet before preparing for the Knight's tournament. The picture shows a Knight on horseback throwing a disc onto the spike. Tales of Knights and dragons and songs of King Arthur and his Knights followed before the weary lords lay down their heads.

Cubs from 2nd Bracknell visited Youlbury for a weekend with an astronomical theme. They worked on the requirements of the soon to be re-instated Astronomer's Badge which included finding out about the stars and planets. They had time for a rocket race and to explore the site. Cub Scout Leader, Nick Layt said We asked the Cubs to do a bit of research into the stars and planets before we came to camp and then to present their findings to the group. I was really impressed how well all the Cubs did with this part of the programme. This is our second camp in 2006. We took 16 first time campers to Earleywood in January and had 20 Cubs at this 2 night event. This means we are well on the way to 90 Cub nights at Camp in our 90th birthday year. The total stands at 56 so far. For more pictures from the event see 2nd Bracknell Website

Five members of East Reading Explorer Scouts decided to start their weekend D of E expedition hike with some stunning views from the brand new Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. Arriving the day after the Spinnaker Tower opened to the public, the views from the Crow?s Nest were breath-taking. The group braved the largest glass floor in Europe with a view 100 metres straightdown and they even lay on it for the group photo. After the inspiring views the group set off on foot via the paths and tracks of Hampshire to Cricket Campsite set in the Manor Farm Country Park next to the River Hamble. Although deep in to Autumn, the group braved the night in a simple shelter. It was a great weekend. East Reading Explorer Scouts

Scouts on Dartmoor

4th Newbury St Johns Scouts left Newbury on a dry warm October evening. You would think by now we would have realised our leaders do know what they are talking about! When they said be prepared for all weathers they really meant it. By the time we stopped at the M5 services the rain had started, we all walked into the services expecting to look out of place in our Scout uniforms but had not allowed for the Cowboys and Indians arriving at the same time from a University Surf Club, some people say our uniforms look silly well !!!! The journey continued South West and clearly we were heading into the eye of the storm. By the time we got to our Overnight barn accommodation near Postbridge on Dartmoor the rain had stopped we hoped for the weekend but could it be another false hope. We unloaded and soon tucked into Bean on toast and hot Drinks, the usual instructions came from the leaders, a quick review of the next days routes and then the statutory get yourselves to bed and sleep you will need to get plenty of rest. Of course like all good scouts on a weekend camp we listened carefully to the instructions waited for the leaders to retire and then had a mass caterpillar fight. Yes as usual we got caught. Do you leaders ever sleep? Saturday morning arrived far to quickly and following breakfast we were issued with our lunch, route cards, maps etc. As we left the Car park to start our walk a kind Local asked one of the leaders if we were prepared for the terrain and weather, you would think another knowledgeable adult making comments like this would have told use something, off we went on a orienteering exercise called Letter boxing. This required us finding very small container holding Rubber stamps hidden around the moor using map references and bearings. Ok time to confess who was listening on the training night, what was the comment about leap frogging I?m sure it would help to remember. Almost mid day and at last we are allowed to play on some rocks and the sun came out well for about 10 minutes. Our afternoon hike was a bit more of a challenge not only on distance but a lack of landmarks and some very spongy surfaces, at least the rain held off for most of the time and every now and then we were told the sun was out, must be their age and I think the leaders need more eye tests. As the light was fading suddenly the Mini bus came into sight, where does that sudden rush of energy come from to ensure you get the best seat. As we sat down for our stew in the evening and a review of the day how could it possibly be true that we had not walked over 100 miles, our feet felt like they had. A lot more sleep was had this night despite the barn smelling of wet walking boots and socks nobody appeared to notice and we didn?t need telling twice to get to bed. Sunday was wet, I?ve never seen rain like it and so much in one morning. The day started well a nice drive and the chance to walk over the old Clapper Bridge before our Hikes started. The first task was a short stint to Hartland Tor where two new members of the troop were invested. Then we split into 2 Groups one group went Eastish to find a Sheep fold ? that?s a Square pen made from a dry stone wall to the rest of us then onto a ruin in an old Tin mining area before returning along the valley, this would have been made much easier had one of our maps not been last seen floating down the river. Mind you we were about to get very wet anyway so probably should have gone it after it. The second group shot off as if they were on a real mission and soon disappeared into the mist, the went up the valley with a goal of finding some Waterfalls and ?bigger? hills and Stone cirles. The next we saw of them they were across the valley climbing towards the top and heading West. As we followed the River back we kept seeing the other group appear on ridges and through valleys and they strode with purpose. We later found out that they had managed to cross the river without the aid of a bridge and were very proud of the fact! Shame the soaking boots gave the game away lads. By the time we returned to the Car park the other group had arrived and changed bagging all the best seats in the van, plus had managed to miss the worst of the rain, well not really just spent less time in it. The thought of getting the trangier cookers out for lunch was not a prospect we were looking forward to and clearly nor were the leaders as we realised when we pulled up in Princetown by the Fish and chip shop, what a great way to end a fantastic weekend. Thank you to the Five Leaders who gave us this experience. We are all looking forward to our next trip down to Dartmoor but can we have just a bit more Sun!!! 4th Newbury Scouts

Young Leader Day Trip to Calias

Maidenhead Young Leaders went on a Weekend trip to Dover and included a day trip to Calais. We arrived on the Saturday night and put tents up just in time before the thunder and lightening started. Saturday was an early rise to catch the ferry across to France. We walked around the town and then climbed 271 steps up to the top of the lighthouse! We had a brief trip to the hypermarket and then it was time to go home. Back in Dover we ate fish and chips and played games in the dark on the beach. Sunday was planned to go Gliding, but the visibility was too poor, so we played skittles and then we went to Dover Castle. Before going home we visited the Grand Shaft (more stairs!) and then the Redoubt. A good weekend was had by all.

Wild Camp with 1st Hungerford Scouts

On this wild camp, Thomas, Annabelle, Matt, Victoria & me, Tom, from 1st Hungerford scouts went on a hill walking trip to Wales. We started out from the car park anticipating the long walk and camp after a long 3 hour journey with the trailer with our gear attached to the car. It was a hilly start, with lots of small hills, all seeming to go upwards. As we could see the car and trailer for almost the entire walk to the lake, it didn?t seem like we went very far. When we got to the lake however, we started to see how far we had come, and so had a very competitive stone skimming contest. We soon found that the original site was too windy to put up tents on, so we had to find another camp site. When the tents were up, we all sat down to a well earned bowl of steaming noodles and a cup of hot chocolate. After this we resumed the skimming contest, which went on until it was getting dark. In the tent, we had a good long sleep and conversation on the day ahead. The next day we packed up camp, and moved off, and all only 20 minutes late! We started out back round the lake the way we had come. We then faced a steep climb to the top of a cliff, to the trig point. Then, we went to find a Second World War plane crash site. There wasn?t a lot there, just a pile of stones where the plane came down. Some of us then went further along the cliff to the end to look at the views. We then welcomed the descent down the cliff to the car, where we greeted a nice picnic and a Coke! As we were tired, the journey home proved to be just as long as the way there with numerous games to pass the time, but Most of us were asleep by the time we got home. Thanks to Siu-Hung and Mark Croft for taking us on this amazing and enlightening experience!

Eurojam opened with a fantastic ceremony on Saturday evening attended by over 10,000 Scouts from 57 countries. Peter Duncan the Chief Scout launched the 10 day long international camp. The Scouts were entertained by gymnasts, the Bogus Brothers (Rock band), the Eurojam Choir and much much more.

Although there are still 12 days to go to Eurojam it seemed to make sense today to get the tent out of the loft and check it was all in one piece. Tent piching is always easy when you know how - unfortunately as the photo shows our reporter still has some practising to do to get it even reasonable.

Wild Camp in the Black Mountains

The camp was great. We started off in the car park next to the river which was to be our water supply at the camp. There was the ?Dragon? down-hill mountain bike race on the other side of the river so the car-park was full. We ate our lunch on the Saturday under the shade of the trees just before we set off. We began up the sloping pathway, I was heaving under the weight of my pack but that was only because I have much shorter legs than the rest of the Scouts! We came out of the trees and walked up onto the top where we arrived at a Cairn. We then walked up the ridge and into the cloud. The only people we met were Army Cadets who were in tee shirts even though it was cold. At the end of the ridge we arrived at a Trig point, still in the mist, where we turned off the top and then down to our camp site beside the river ? just a little bit of flat(ish) grass. We put up the tents and cooked our dinner of noodles, hot-chocolate and cake. Next morning we had a quick breakfast and got the tents down and everything back into our packs. Setting off, back up the valley we then turned onto the Westerly ridge and climbed along the tops finally climbing up at ?Pen y Gadair Fawr?. Then back down to the car for a late lunch and the trip back to Hungerford. All in all, a great trip!!

Hiking in the New Forest

The photo shows Scouts from 1st Langley taking time out for cooking during their recent hike through the New Forest. There is a particular skill to preparing a tasty meal for two using a Trangia cooker which runs on methylated spirits but only provides heat to a single pot rather than the vast array of facilities available in the kitchen at home. This meal is clearly rather appetising.

Scouts from 3rd Newbury (Brydges) Scout Troop took on the challenge of a walking weekend. The Scouts walked along Wayfarer's Walk from near Kingsclere to Combe Jibbet, learning about different types of trees and leaves and other plants along the route, and also about wild animals such as the many birds. They cooked their meals en-route using hiking stoves, and by the end of the weekend all the Scouts on the activity successfully completed all the elements of the Expedition Challenge Badge. We were lucky to have brilliant weather for the weekend, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The photo shows some of the Scouts taking a well earned rest along the Wayfarers Walk.

Cub Scouts have fun and help others

When the South East Berkshire District Sixers were asked what activities they wanted in 2005 their list included orienteering and a picnic. We combined both activities in our event which was held in Bracknell's Lily Hill Park. We decided to make the orienteering a sponsored event to support the Bulangira Disables? Association in Uganda as this is something that leaders in our District support. We had 39 Cubs from 5 packs and sponsor forms seen on the day suggest that we ought to raise the grand total of ?366. Lily Hill Park has just had a ?1m makeover thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Cubs were able to explore it from one side to the other in their hunt for those elusive bases. The orienteering was followed by a picnic tea and some African themed games. Unfortunately the day was rather showery and we had to run for cover a couple of times but that didn't dampen the spirits of our Cub Scouts.Check out the 2nd Bracknell Site for more photos.

Rewards come to all that try! During the Autumn and Spring terms the Cubs at 2nd Bracknell battle it out in a points competiton called the Simpson Cup. The winning team at Christmas got a morning of bowling followed by lunch at McDonalds. The winners at Easter won a weekend away. The competition was won by Brown Six from Stags and Wolves. Each member of Browns was then able to invite a Cub from another six to come to camp. This was the first camp to be officially lead by Baloo as he is working towards his nights away permit. Highlight of the camp was the on site activities with archery and the adventure course proving very popular.

Two Explorer Scouts from East Reading, Claire and Michael spent over an hour with presenters Jim Cathcart and Maggie Philbin on their Breakfast show on Radio Berkshire talking about Scouting. Explorer Scout Clare said "You do loads of cool stuff - it is really really fun. We've been skating, hiking and we do water activities - since we joined the Explorer Scouts we have met loads of new people". The Explorer Scouts were also on hand to contribute to some of the items on the Breakfast show including one of the morning?s stories on pocket money for children and on the regular Birthday Quiz.
First Timer Camp for Bracknell Cubs

Earlier in March a group of Cubs from 2nd Bracknell held a first-timer campers weekend in the County Training Centre at Earleywood. The sun was out and it was a great weekend to be outside. We persuaded the parents to hunt down some big cardboard boxes and we all made some shelters - just an excuse for Shere Khan to pour cold water on the Cubs! Despite being tired by about 8pm it still took until 11pm before the last Cub was asleep but despite that we had 17 Nights Away 1 badges to present the next day. See more photos (there is the treasure hunt, more on those shelters and much much more) at the 2nd Bracknell Scouts Web Site

Some 20 Scouts have been rehearsing twice a week since Christmas and 12 Cub Scouts have been rehearsing since February. The Leaders rehearsed for one day! Pantomine is quite a tradition at Pinkneys Green and this is 27th Year of annual pantomines. The Scouts enjoy putting in a lot of hard work, rehearsing twice a week and taking on the traditional pantomime characters. There are three shows on a stage specially constructed in their Scout Hall which play to packed houses of 70 people per performance. Visit the Pinkneys Green Web Site for more pics.

Cub Scouts Navigate Youlbury

On a winters weekend in February a group of Cub Scouts from 2nd Bracknell took on the challenge of navigating around Youlbury. Despite snow in Bracknell on the Friday morning their base at Youlbury, one of the camp-site buildings, was warm and snug. The almost empty site was ideal for learning about navigation as there was lots of room for trails and treasure hunts. This weekend expedition was based on the Navigator Badge but there was time for other activities. Although the open fire was not available but the Cub Scouts still had a camp fire indoors and then there was the funky chicken song and much more. The Adult Volunteers has their own challenges, it was Shere Khan's first time at doing a Cubs Own and Raksha's first time doing the cooking. To see more on the fabuluous weekend including the funky chicken song and Raksha's shepherds pie visit the 2nd Bracknells site and click on past events.
