Building Opportunities for Young People through Scouting in the Oxford Road Area in Reading

In May 2008. Reading Scouts launched a major initiative to build new opportunities for young people in the Oxford Road Area of Reading through Scouting.

The first phase is working with Reading Borough Council and other agencies, Community Groups and the local Schools to develop the best framework to provide challenges, adventure, fun and friendship for the young people in the Oxford Road area.

Working closely with these groups will be Harriet Riley, a recently appointed full-time Local Development Officer for Berkshire Scouts. Harriet said “I am looking forward to working on this exciting project to bring Scouting to an area undergoing considerable regeneration. It is a great opportunity to help young people take action to help themselves and make a difference”.

The Local Coordinator for the Project is Richard Ellison who will be working with Harriet and Adult Volunteers from the Berkshire Scouts County Development Forum and the local area.

Harriet has visited the Primary Schools in the Oxford Road area to launch the colouring competition with the help of Reading Borough Council. The top 3 entries for each school will on display at the Fun Day in June.

Oxford Road Fun Day 28 June 2008

The Oxford Road team was out in force at the Oxford Road Fun Day on Saturday 28 June 12 to 4pm in Kensington Park just off the Oxford Road.

The team provided some exciting opportunities for young people to find out about the fun, adventure and challenge of Scouting.

The photo left shows the craft activity centre staffed by volunteers from Reading Central District. This was busy with young people and their parents all afternoon.

A very popular activity was the Monkey Rope Bridge and offered the chance of some adventure right in the centre of the Oxford Road area.

The rope bridge and a pull-along bridge were constructed by a team of volunteers from Reading Central District.

Ian Kirkham who leads Scouting in Reading said “The Oxford Road Community Fun Day was a great opportunity to bring the fun, challenge and adventure of Scouting to the heart of the community to show what Scouting has to offer for young people - it was a great team effort”.
