90th Birthday Celebrations for Cub Scouts

On Sunday 24th September after a very wet start to the day the sun shone as over 700 Cub Scouts from across Berkshire gathered at Chalfont Heights to celebrate 90 years of Cubbing with an activity day. The day started at 10.00hrs with a County Grand Howl led by John Shortland and Flag Break. The Cubs then tried their hands at climbing, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, go carts, circus skills, inflatable table top football, basket ball, jousting and sumo wrestling. They were able to ride around the site on Stevenage Scouts train stopping of at the Bird man with his owl and falcon that the cubs could hold, and also visit the hands on farm animals and have a go at the craft based activities.

The sun continued to shine all day, and after a picnic lunch the Cubs were entertained by two clowns from Circus Scene who persuaded a cub and a leader to help in the show, before the activity bases opened for another session of fun before a final County Grand Howl led by John Shortland and on to the fleet of coaches for home.

We had a lot of help from Explorer Scouts, Adult Leaders and Fellowships across Berkshire and without their help the day would not have been such a great success a BIG THANK YOU to them all. more

JOTA and JOTI

The 49th Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) / Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTI) will be held over the weekend of 21st and 22nd October 2006. Two great international Scouting activities to get your Colony/Pack/Troop/Unit/Network involved in. Why not setup some links ready for celebrating 2007 and get more international Scouting in your programme?

What is the Jamboree-On-The-Air? The JOTA is an annual event in which about 500,000 Scouts and Guides all over the world make contacts with each other by means of amateur radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any corner of the world. It's the sheer excitement of having a live conversation with a fellow Scout or Guide in some other place in the world that attracts so many youngsters to this event. JOTA is a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared. It’s a unique opportunity for each individual Scout to get the real feeling of belonging to a worldwide movement. more

What is the Jamboree-On-The-Internet? Similarly to the JOTA, the Jamboree-On-The-Internet connects Scouts using Internet techniques. The JOTI is held on the same weekend as the Jamboree-On-the-Air. Units can choose to take part in either one event or both. Worldwide The JOTA and JOTI are worldwide events. During the weekend, units may participate for 48 hours or any part thereof, from Saturday 00:00hrs until Sunday 24:00hrs local time.  more
