New Beaver Colony Launched in Woodley

It is a big welcome to the Beaver Scouts who are the founding members of the 5th Woodley Crickets Beaver Colony launched on Thursday 25 May. The Colony meets at the Scout Building in the grounds of Waingels Copse School. It is the second Beaver Colony for the Group who are part of the Loddon District. Congratulations to all the Adult Volunteers who made it happen.

Berkshire Jamboree Unit News

Four members of the Berkshire Scouts Jamboree Unit had the opportunity to attend the World Scout Jamboree organisers' Ceremonies Workshop held recently at Youlbury. During the day they were able to give a young person's view on what they would like to see at the Opening Ceremony, at the Closing Ceremony and at the Scouting Sunrise Ceremony (on 1 August 2007).

The Opening Ceremony is one of the most memorable parts of any Jamboree; it is the first time that all 40,000 Scouts will converge into one place and will be truly the point at which the experience of a lifetime will begin. The Berkshire representatives contributed their thoughts and ideas on the ceremonies including discussions on the type of experience the unit members wanted to see.  more

Maurice J Thorne

We regret to announce the death of Maurice Thorne on 21st May 2006, at the age of 83. Maurice served Scouting in Wallingford and Twyford as well as with the Loddon District and Berkshire County Teams.  Maurice’s Funeral and Thanksgiving Service will be held at St Andrews Parish Church, Sonning-on-Thames on Wednesday, 31st May at 1.30 pm. more

Higher than any Beaver has been before

Kennet District Beaver mascot "Bobby" has been trekking through the Himalayas and has seen Everest and many other giant mountains covered in snow and ice.  Despite the lack of trees and rivers Bobby enjoyed his trip and commented that Beaver fur beats any of the current hi tech equipment available for extreme conditions. Bobby had  Assistant Beaver Leader Tony Higgs from the 3rd Newbury Scouts Beaver Colony stuck to his back during the whole trekking trip who says he is sticking with the modern gear ! See the photos here.

World Scout Jamboree

There are many ways to get involved with the World Scout Jamboree which takes place in the UK in July/August 2007. more

As an individual, family, group/unit you could be providing Home Hospitaility (HoHo) to the thousands of young people from across the world either before the World Scout Jamboree of afterwards - what a great opportunity for bringing International Scouting in to you group/unit. Contact Sue Clarkson if you would like to get involved with the HoHo part of the great adventure.

As a adult volunteer you could be there in Hylands Park as a member of the International Service Team (IST). The deadline for applications to join the team is 14 July. All the information is available on the Berkshire Scouts Jamboree Website www.berkshirescoutsjamboree.org.uk more

If you are a Scientist, Technologist or Engineer  then perhaps you or your company might like to get involved in developing some science and technology activities at the World Scout Jamboree. Contact Geoff Mitchell for more information.
