Safety in Scouting update

Great news!  We are pleased to announce the following additional District Safety In Scouting Co-ordinators:

South Berkshire District    Robert (Rob) Wilson   safetycoordinator_southberkshire@berkshirescouts.org.uk

South East Berkshire District  Graham Tidy safetycoordinator_seberkshire@berkshirescouts.org.uk

The Safety in Scouting Coordinators are available to provide advice and support to Groups and Districts in ensuring that Scouting takes place in a safe environment. They are particularly concerned with providing advice on meeting places, Scout owned or managed buildings and organising events. The Safety in Scouting Team is not directly concerned with adventurous activities for which the activity team provides advice and support. more including list of all Coordinators

Loddon District Annual General Meeting

The Murray Plate was present to 1st Twyford Scouts by Robert Kimber.  The Chair Donald Macdonald said "that  we have made good progress as  District and have gone from strength to strength". Geoff Barnes, the District Commission talked about the opportunities which the Centenary of Scouting in  2007 particularly in terms of growth and recognition. Geoff Mitchell DCC thanked all the adult volunteers who made Scouting possible in Loddon and congratulated them on opening a second Beaver Colony at 5th Woodley. more

Reading District Annual General Meeting

Hamish Stout, County Commissioner, presented Stuart Jones, District Explorer Scout Commissioner for the three Reading Districts (East, Central and Pang), with his certificate of appointment and a 15 year Long Service Award to Roger Fleming  District Chair. The meeting saw Roger Fleming re-nominated as District Chair and Pamela Harrison and David Newman re-elected as Secretary and Treasurer. Margaret Ellison talked about the Deep Sea Fellowship, and her role as Secretary. more

Scouts Golf Gala raises £3000!

The Business Development Team of South Berkshire District Scouts staged their third annual corporate golf gala on June 2nd, at Wokefield Park, Mortimer. Chairman of the organising committee, Howard de Silva, said “Once again, we found the course, facilities and staff at Wokefield Park first class.... The weather was glorious, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. With a great deal of financial support from local commerce and industry, especially from Thames Valley Windows, our Principal Sponsor, the event raised a magnificent £3000.”  Details of the event, together with a large selection of photographs taken during the day, can be found at www.scouts-golf.co.uk. The organisers are already taking enquiries of interest into next year’s event. more

Developing Scouting in Berkshire

Saturday 17 June 2006 saw a meeting of the Berkshire Scouts County Management Team to review progress and explore new ways of bring even better Scouting to even more young people across Berkshire. All Group Scout Leaders, District Commissioners and their teams  and the County-wide Team were invited and the Barn at Purley was packed with volunteers. A major part of the day was spent in consultation on three major County-wide projects involving adult recruitment and retention in 6-14 sections, developing Explorer Scouts and Scout Network and a marketing strategy for Scouting in Berkshire. The meeting heard about the growth in Explorer Scouting and discussed the importance of a real programme for the Explorer Scouts who have opted to take part in the Young Leader Scheme. There was an opportunity to meet members of the new team involved in supporting Explorer Scouts and Scout Network. The remainder of the day was taken with looking ahead to the opportunities which 2007 presented.  Contact your local GSL or District Team member for further  feedback from the meeting. more

The last two years has seen major developments in Adult Support and Training with the introduction of the new Adult Training Programme.  In July 2006, the Adult Support and Training Team will be carrying out a review of the current arrangements and your personal experiences and suggestions will be of particular value in this review. A simple on-line form provides a straightforward way for you to contribute to the review. For your comments to have the maximum value please send them as soon as possible and in any event by 10 July 2006 - why not do it now? more

Scouts Lead but your vote still needed in poll

Jessica Williams, the author of the book 'How to give to Charity', is donating all royalties due to her from sales to a fund to be given to charity. Icon Books, the publisher, are matching these royalties with the same amount again.

It's up to the public to decide to which charity the money should be given. Currently the Scout Association is just in the leader with over 20% of the nominations.  Your vote could make all the difference. Nominate today at www.howtogivetocharity.org more

20 Years of Beaver Scouts

As well as 90 years of Cub Scouts, 2006 also marks the 20th Birthday of Beaver Scouts. Check out the Beaver Party Scene in Camden and Islington where they were holding a Circus Party this weekend. more
