News from Berkshire Scouting World Jamboree Special October 2005

World Jamboree

The 21st World Scout Jamboree will be held 27 July to 8 August 2007 and forms one of the Centenary Celebration Events in 2007.

The theme of the 21st World Scout Jamboree in 2007 is “One World, One Promise” – which captures the aspirations and hopes of young people for the future.

40,000 young people will camp, live and work alongside each other. They will come from a variety of different cultures, backgrounds, and religions. Together they will celebrate what unites them, and learn what they can do together to help build a better world.

Berkshire Scouts will be represented by 2 Jamboree Units each consisting of 36 young people and 4 Adult Leaders.  There will also be many volunteers from Berkshire involved with the planning, organisation and delivery of this fantastic experience.

Details of the Berkshire Jamboree adventure are available on the Jamboree Unit web site www.berkshirescoutsjamboree.org.uk and that website will contain the most recent news, application forms and much much more.

The World Scout Jamboree website is available at  www.scouting2007.org

World Jamboree Units - Leaders

The countdown to the 21st World Jamboree in 2007 has begun.  There are three information evenings in the next week for Adult Volunteers who are interested in being part of the Berkshire Jamboree Leadership team. There will be four adult leaders for each of the two units.  Any adult actively involved in Scouting anywhere in Berkshire is eligible to apply. You may be involved with Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout Network or an Adult Support role - all are most welcome to get involved.  There are literally no restrictions on who can apply other than you an Adult Volunteer involved with Scouting in Berkshire. If you are interested go for it.

To help you decide whether being part of the Jamboree Unit Leadership Team is right for you, three information evenings have been arranged for Adults. A number of presentations will be made by members of former Jamboree Unit Leadership Teams and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.  Please attend which ever information evening is most convenient to you - no booking or registration is required.

World Jamboree Units - Young People

Young people will be able to apply for a place in the two Jamboree Units in January 2006. The last date for applying for a place will be announced in the New Year but is expected to be late March or early April 2006. By the end of April Unit Membership will be confirmed , unit leadership teams confirmed and in May 2006 the Berkshire Jamboree Units will be officially launched.

Ho-Ho

Home Hospitality (Ho Ho) is an exciting opportunity for Scouts attending the Jamboree to also experience local culture and Scouting – for 3-4 days either just before or just after the Jamboree itself.  Ho Ho is also an exciting opportunity for local Scout families in the UK and beyond to be a part of the Jamboree experience by hosting visiting Scouts for a few days. For a few days, Scouts from other countries stay with the families or communities of local Scouts, and gain an insight into the way of life in another country that no ordinary tourist would enjoy.  Many previous Jamboree Scouts have said afterwards that the Ho Ho experience was perhaps the most memorable part of their trip – resulting in lasting friendships with their host family and sometimes follow-on exchange visits.

Ho Ho will be available to Jamboree Scouts and Unit leaders.  Some contingents may prefer home-based Ho Ho, with pairs of Scouts staying with each host Scout family (in a separate sleeping area), and the Unit leaders typically staying with the family of local Scout leaders. Other contingents may prefer community-based Ho Ho – where the Jamboree Unit stays together in community accommodation.

Details of how Scout Groups and Districts across Berkshire can get involved with Ho-Ho will emerge over the next few months.
