Dear All

Thank you for booking onto Validation next Monday 6 Februaryat URC, Maidenhead.

I am trying to get another TA to help but at the present time it is only myself so it may only be 2 modules that I can do for each of you, and if that is the case I will need to give you specific times so that you are not waiting too long.

Please can you confirm what modules you were looking at getting validated and if you have a preference of early 7.15 or middle evening which is likely to be 8.10/15 or later 9 to 10.

I can't promise anything as it will depend on the replies and if I get another TA that evening, however I will respond by 8pm on Sunday to confirm a time for you.

Hello Sue, Karen and Val,

Thank you for using the 'online' booking system to register for Module 37 on 3 March. Unfortunately the timings for the day are not correct and despite these being carefully checked by the County Training Team before publishing them, for some reason they have been shown wrongly. The correct timings for Module 37 are; 9.30am registration ready for a 9.45 start and the session will finish at about 1pm. Refreshments will be provided at the start and mid way through the course. The venue and everything else is as stated. Nearer the time I will send you a letter just as a reminder with my mobile number in case you need it on the day.

Really sorry about this error but it was due to circumstances beyond the Training Team's control.

At present you are the only participant for this course, subsequently I need to decide what to do as 1 is a low number.

However I realise that we had to cancel the Module 3 course that you booked on last May, so could you let me know if evenings are the only time you can make it, sorry if you told me back then.

Also if we do run it for 1 are you OK to do it by yourself, it's not always the best learning enviroment I know.

Hi all

Just a quick reminder about the Getting Started Day on Saturday in 2nd Thatcham HQ, Memorial Playing Field, off Brownsfield Road, Thatcham, RG18 3AG, from 9.45am to around 5pm. Please park in the large Memorial Car Park and don't worry about the signs about not parking for more than 3 hours! I plan to put some signs out to show you where to walk to the HQ, but in case you get there before me - head towards the clock tower, then on to the field and turn left along the path as far as you can go, and turn left into the compound. The HQ door is the 3rd one down.

Just to warn you in advance - please bring the phone number of someone we can contact in case of an emergency. Sometimes it is hard to think of someone on the day or to have their number with you! My mobile number is 07745 285 226 in case you need to contact me at the last minute.

The style guide for The Scout Association has been updated to provide a more comprehensive guide, to include updates to ensure it stays relevant and to keep communication clear for the newest of members. The style guide exists with the intention of promoting accuracy and consistency throughout The Association’s written communications, not just from HQ but locally too. It aims to encourage a recognisable family style, and establish standard good practice. The style guide should be regarded as a set of guidelines; it is not intended to ‘cramp your style’. Anything with a publication date of 1 January 2012 onwards will reflect the new style guide while existing books and resources will be updated when they are being reviewed. Please share the guide with members of your team who regularly write communications for Scouting in your area. For queries, questions or clarifications contact styleguide@scouts.org.uk.

As there will only be a few Training Advisers available to talk to you at 8pm on Wednesday evening, it would be best if everyone arrives as slightly different times. If you can't make my suggested times, please get back to me ASAP!

If Lizzie and Donna from Hungerford, and Anthony from Easthampstead can come for 8pm, and then Jacqui from 3rd Newbury comes at 8.15, then Paul van Zyl at 8.30. The three Leaders from Compton come at 8.45, and Hazel as soon after 9 as she can make it, then we should in theory be well spread out enough for you not to have to wait around too long.

If you want to come earlier you are very welcome - we will have tea and coffee for you - but please let me know if you need to come later than I've suggested.

Dear Leader Team,

Thank you so much for all your support and help so far in getting Aragon2012 into the real stage of planning . In a little over eight months, we will be getting ready to depart on the trip. For those of you who have been involved in marketing this event and running the Parents’ and Participants’ Briefings, a special “thank you,” as your hard work has resulted in over one hundred Explorer Scouts and Scout Network in signing up.

In order for us to deliver such an amazing event, we now need you! Our team managers have already started contacting people for specific roles, but there are many jobs still to do. Some of you may wish to get involved now, in supporting the event, whilst others may prefer to have a less commitment leading to the event, then assist in leading the event in August.

Whichever suits you best, we do need a commitment from you now, so that we can plan ahead and to ensure that we have enough adult leaders for an event of this size. If you have not already done so, would you please download the Registration Form and Information from the Berkshire Scouts website and send it off to Bill Carter with the deposit. As you are probably already aware, the fee for leaders on the trip is £450, which we need to have received prior to departure. What we ask for at this stage is a £50 deposit, which is our way of knowing that you are serious about coming along, so we don’t find ourselves short of leaders come August 2012!

Anyway, a date for your diary: we would like to invite you to a leader team meeting on 31^st January 2012 at Wokingham Waterside Centre. The start-time for the meeting is 7:30pm, however the doors will be open and the kettle on from 7:00pm onwards. Hopefully you are able to make it, although we can catch-up another time if you are cannot.

So on behalf of Bob and me, a big thank you for joining the team. We very much look forward to working with you alll.

Thank you for booking on the Ongoing Learning Young Leaders' Scheme course on Saturday 21st January 2012 at Gravelly Training Centre.

The Course start time is 9.45am for registration, etc. and in line with ALL Scouting Activities you will be required to provide an emergency contact name and telephone number for the Course's InTouch system. Currently the Programmed finish time is 4.30pm but this may alter one way or the other as this will be the first time we have delivered the Course.

Module 4

You have booked to attend Module 4, Tools for the Job (Managers), being held tomorrow, 10th January 2012. The module will be held at the Gravelly Training Centre (map link already sent) and the doors will open at 19.30, for a prompt start at 19.45.

There have been some questions as to whom this course is suitable for - it is specificaly for those adults who are in a Managerial role within Scouting. We will be discussing the job roles that this module covers during the evening, so I would suggest that everyone attends, irrespective of current named role and we will clarify responsibilities of the job during the evening.

Ongoing Learning - Young Leaders' Scheme

Discover the finer points of the Young Leaders’ scheme and how you can benefit from having a Young Leader working with your Section Team.It is for adults in the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections, including Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders and Managers (eg Group Scout Leaders or District Commissioners).

It provides information and practical advice for welcoming, supporting and working with Young Leaders in your section. Adults who have completed their Wood Badge are required to complete five hours ongoing learning a year, averaged over the length of their appointment. Saturday 21st January 2012 – 9.45am to 4pm – Gravelly Training Centre. Book online here.

The featured photo this fortnight - Keen to grow, Central Windsor scout group have recently launched a second Beaver colony. Here you can see some new recruits, young and older! There was a fabulously warm feeling of enthusiasm from existing volunteers which has definitely rubbed off on the new teams, with fantastic support from Harriet Riley, Local Development Officer.

New County Directory Released

An updated County Directory is now online in the secure storage area here. This is available to all GSLs, district teams and the county team. If you have trouble accessing this please contact directory@berkshirescouts.org.uk

Southern 50 Hike

The annual Southern 50 Challenge Hike is on Saturday 11^th February 2012. This is an adventure based navigation event which takes place from a new venue every year at a different location in The Chiltern Hills. Teams of 3 to 5 participants have to navigate their way around one of three routes, walking from checkpoint to checkpoint. Walkers have 24 hours to complete either a 50 mile, 50 km or 30 km route. The 30 km route is exclusively for Explorer Scouts.

All walkers are encouraged to stay over on the Saturday night at the start and finish venue, details of which will be disclosed shortly before the event. There will be entertainment and activities laid on for the Explorer Scouts on the Saturday evening and the presentation of trophies and certificates for all walkers takes place at 1000 hrs on the Sunday morning. Mountain walking training and experience for Aragon 10-12 February 2012

We have just been able to obtain a large number of places on a hillwalking weekend in Snowdonia over the weekend of the 10th-12th of February.

We will be based at Yr Hafod, the Welsh Scouts Mountain centre in the middle of Snowdonia, a centrally heated hostel with bunk beds, hot showers, drying room, catering facilities etc., from which we will explore the beauty of the mountains around us on the Saturday and the Sunday led by qualified leaders. We will be leaving Berkshire late on Friday afternoon and get back early on Sunday evening. The cost is £ 45 plus transport (allow around £ 20-25) and we will be organising minibuses etc. as required to get you there from convenient pick up points across the County.

While we will be announcing at least one more weekend as soon as we can, please remember that we need to be sure that everyone has adequate mountain walking experience before we leave for Aragon and that this is an outstanding opportunity to see Snowdonia at its most awesome.

If you can come please complete and return the forms as indicated with payment of £ 45 (cheques etc. made out to 'Berkshire Scouts Expeditions' as soon as possible as we have to confirm the booking by the New Year.

Just to say that the timings for Modules 6 and 3 were slightly wrong on the website and should be Mod 6 1.15 for a 1.30 start to finish at 2pm and then Module 3 is 2pm start to finish 5pm latest.

News from Berkshire Scouts - Want to shape WINGS 2014?

Want to shape WINGS 2014 as a Deputy Director?

WINGS is a highly successful international event hosted in Berkshire every few years, welcoming thousands of young people and adults from around the world. Preparations for the next WINGS in the summer of 2014 are already underway and the WINGS 2014 Steering Group is now actively seeking two people to drive this forward as Deputy Directors.

In the last few weeks Brendan Booth has been appointed as the WINGS 2014 Director. Brendan has been involved in previous WINGS as well as having considerable voluntary and professional experience of delivering high-quality large-scale events. The WINGS 2014 Steering Group warmly welcome Brendan to this role and look forward to working closely with him.

To support Brendan we are looking to appoint two Deputy Directors. Each Deputy Director will be responsible for actively supporting the planning and delivery of WINGS between now and the close of the project after 2014. These roles are open to any adult member of Berkshire Scouts or Girlguiding Royal Berkshire and you will be fully supported by both Associations.

In addition to appointing a passionate Project Team, each Deputy Director will take on specific responsibilities which best suit their skills, experiences and interests.

For more information please look at the Deputy Director Job Description and contact steering@wings2014.org.uk for more information. The deadline for applications is Friday 2nd December and interviews will take place in Reading on Saturday 10th December, although alternative arrangements can be made if you are unable to make this date.

Cancellation of Course

I am extremely sorry to say, that as only two people have booked for this course, it would be impossible to run an interactive workshop, so I am cencelling the Safeguarding Awareness course on the 27th. October.

I have booked a new date at Gravelly Training Centre for Wednesday 7th. December.

Hi Linda, Julie and Chris

You have all booked for validation on 7th November which is good, however I cannot see you all at once.

Chris can you do 7.30pm and Linda and Julie if you arrive about 8.20 we should be able to start at 8.30pm. Linda/Julie I should be able to do you together as you are same group same section, but you must have looked at the validation requirements and written notes so that I can be sure each of you understand the training.

You should bring with you your training file including course attendance certificates, evidence to validate the modules you wish to validate, and if you are wanting to validate Module 1 please ensure that you have completed the NSPCC (Educare course) and bring along the certificate. If you have not received this please let me know. The more you have in writing as notes the quicker it is to validate modules.

If you are unable to make the time suggested above please let me know and we have time to swop around.

A Reminder for Sunday

Hi All,

It is not clear if the system is working properly at the moment, so this is to remind you that you have booked on the course on Sunday 16th. October (This coming weekend)

If you cannot now make this course, I need to know ASAP, for catering reasons. Also, non attendance without notification (Except in an emergency) means that your Scout Group will be cahrged for the cost of your course.

I have included times for all modules on the 15th here at Datchet, so please come along about 15 mins before the starting time for those that you have booked.

Times for Mod 1 are arrive 9.30 for a 9.45 start. Casual clothing, bring notebook and something to write with and any other certificates and paperwork you already have.

Mod 6 will be approx

1315 and Mod 3 should start about 1400.

Lunch will be provided for those that are there all day and it will be between 1 and 6 at about 12.30.

Leaders interested in Aragon2012 Expedition?

Leaders interested in joining Aragón 2012 expedition to Spain next August are welcome to an information meeting tonight, 10th October at 7:30, for 8:00 start, at the Wokingham Waterside Centre.

The expedition, based on Adventurous Activities, requires leaders with activity permits in Hill walking, climbing, water skills, mountain biking etc...Leaders keen to develop their skills are also welcome. We are also looking for dynamic and enthusiastic camp leaders who could join the Catering and Welfare, Logistic or Administration teams ( no activity permits necessary for these roles)

Leaders interested in Aragon2012 Expedition?

Leaders interested in joining Aragón 2012 expedition to Spain next August are welcome to an information meeting tonight, 10th October at 7:30, for 8:00 start, at the Wokingham Waterside Centre.

The expedition, based on Adventurous Activities, requires leaders with activity permits in Hill walking, climbing, water skills, mountain biking etc...Leaders keen to develop their skills are also welcome. We are also looking for dynamic and enthusiastic camp leaders who could join the Catering and Welfare, Logistic or Administration teams ( no activity permits necessary for these roles)

Open to leaders in any sections.If you can't make it tonight, get in touch with aragon2012@berkshirescouts.org.ukfor more information.

We're pleased to announce that dozens of new GAP resources have been launched this week as part of the Project Africa Challenge Badge. We're delighted that many sections are taking up the challenge this term to make the international elements of their programme even more relevant and exciting.

Me2 Club Inclusion Training

Me2 Club will be continuing our Inclusion Training Project. The project offers leaders of mainstream activities (anything from Brownies to Drama Club to Rock Climbing!) a series of free workshops on Disability and Inclusion, as well as bespoke workshops and tailored advice to groups.

The workshops cover a range of topics, all relating to disability and inclusion. You are welcome to book onto as many as you wish. Topics include Autism, Makaton, Supporting behaviour difficulties, communication with children with additional needs and inclusion – adapting activities to make them accessible to all.

Leader Team Meeting...

Thank you for registering your interest in joining the Activities Expedition to the Spanish Pyrenees next year. So that we can talk more about the event, introduce you to the Management Team and start looking at your roles on the event, we would like to invite you to a team meeting.

The meeting will take place on 10^th October 2011 at the Wokingham Waterside Centre. Please arrive around 7:30pm for and 8pm start.

The plan for the evening will start with a plenary talk by Bob and me, where we will bring you up to speed about the plans, so far. We will then start looking at your individual roles and teams. With the four Team Managers, we will look at the sub-teams for the event.

Unfortunatly we need to cancel the course due to lack of numbers.

Equally this is the second half of the module 3 course and the last first half was also cancelled due to lack of numbers.

The next available course in this area ( in Langley ) will be on Saturday the 15th October.

Feedback from Sweden and Uganda

Dates for your diary - the feedback afternoon by the Berkshire Unit to the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden is on Sunday 16th October in the afternoon in Kennet School, Thatcham - exact timings to follow. The feedback afternoon by the Project Africa team is on Sunday 27th November at Spirit Conferencing, Slough - exact timings to follow. We'd love to see as many of you as possible to share in the fantastic experiences and achievements of the last few months.

Grants available for new sections

If you've opened a new section in the last two years, have you claimed your free money? £100 is available from The Scout Association, the Berkshire team match this with a further £100 and most districts also the same support. Thanks to Derek Jackson

For 17 years Derek Jackson has given his time and dedication organising the venues, accommodation, transport, scouts and guides for the National Scout & Guide Symphony Orchestra courses. Derek feels that it is now time for him to step down and it has been agreed that the job will be split into two sections. Derek has handed on the reins as Event Organiser for the Orchestra Courses but Derek will continue to support the administration.

Many thanks to Derek and his team for their continuous hard work, dedication and enjoyment of the Concerts over the last 17 years.

Campdowne 2013 - Get involved!

Campdowne is an international Scout and Guide camp held in the UK at Downe Scout Activity Centre in South-East London’s greenbelt.

The event has run every four years for over 20 years with around two thousand participants from the UK and Overseas attending each year. Campdowne 2013 will follow a similar format to previous years but with a greater focus on mixing opportunities and with this year’s theme of Carnival, there will be a greater emphasis on entertainments on the main stage at the heart of the event.

There will be a comprehensive programme of activities on and off site ranging from the traditional to the unusual with we hope some new experiences for all. Campdowne 2013 will run from Thursday 1st August until Saturday 10th August 2013 with some volunteers being required to attend before and after to help set up and strike the event.

Oh, and there will be a Leaders’ Club with its own programme of entertainment to allow leaders and volunteers a little time to relax! Climbing Centre Discounts for Scout Groups

The new Reading Climbing Centre offer a discounted rate for any sections who want to visit for a taster. For an hour's session with a minimum of 5 people at £8.50 per person, or a 90 minute session with a minimum of 5 people at £11.50.

having chosen and booked the 5th July as a suitable date for Module 23, Safety for Managers and Supporters, County have now decided on that date for the County AGM! I regret that the Training Team will need to attend the County AGM, so I have no choice but to cancel the course for that evening.

Getting Started Training

Hi all

Just a quick reminder about the Getting Started Day on Saturday - at 2nd Thatcham HQ - 9.45 am to 5.00pm (approx). I'll put some signs out where Brownsfield Road meets the A4 (almost opposite the American Golf Shop) - please park in the car park and walk towards the clock tower, past the tennis courts, on to the playing field and turn sharp left along the path to the HQ. I'll put more signs out there too.

When you sign in we will ask you for the phone number of a contact in case of an emergency - eg spouse, partner, parent etc so please think about who you could put.

Thursday 9th June, 8pm: Holiday Inn, Reading, RG2 0SL. A quick reminder that all leaders in Berkshire are invited to join the County Programme team and Section leaders for an Information and Discussion Evening on Thursday this week. Come and learn what is happening at County and National level in Scouting and get the answer to your questions by asking the panel of Scout leaders present.

Is your group taking part in the challenge? Then bring your programme plans, photos or any other documentation you have and the PA team will be happy to examine it all and give you the badge on Thursday.

County AGM

In addition to hosting the Celebration Evening, all adults are invited to join the Annual General Meeting for Berkshire County Scout Council on Tuesday 5th July at 7pm. More information is available here.

Volunteers Needed for 31st July - 8th August

Help is required to run the residential orchestral course for the National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra, which is being held in Berkshire this year at the Bearwood College Wokingham.

The members are all scouts or guides aged between 13 and 25 from all over the UK. Free food and accommodation is on offer in exchange for assisting in the general running of the one week course, supervising and the organising of afternoon activities Monday to Thursday during their 2 hour free time – swimming on site,, ball games, treasure hunt etc.

We are looking for two Leaders or older Network members to attend for the week, one will need to be able to drive a Bedford Luton taillift van to load and take all the instruments to the Concert venue in Newbury on the Friday afternoon and back after the concert (5th August). The concert on the Saturday is in the Bearwood College Theatre so will not require moving instruments.

Blast Festival – 2nd - 4th September 2011

Blast Fest is a brand new event in the form of an open-air music festival with huge headline acts, up and coming stars and local established bands. It’s open to Explorer Scouts and Scouts from across the United Kingdom.

Hours of live bands followed by a huge party to celebrate ten years of Explorer Scouting! Activities during the day are sure to bring enjoyment ahead of a great night of dancing, moshing and raving in the main arena.

The cost of the weekend is from £20 and details can be found at http://www.blastfestival.co.uk/. The event is organised by Middlesex West and takes place at Paccar Scout Camp, Chalfont. The first 300 bookings will be entered into a prize draw to win a backstage experience and personalised backstage pass for themselves and a friend. Booking closes 20 July 2011.

The featured photo this fortnight - Playing an active role in the Reading Children's Festival, scouts from Pang Valley, Reading Central and Loddon came together to give the public a taste of the adventure.

A huge thanks go to the climbing tower team from 79th Reading who worked tirelessly throughout the day and gave a brilliant impression of Scouting.

Media Skills and Public Affairs Opportunity for Young People

Young People are Scouting. Only you as a member of Scouting can convey the fun, challenge, adventure and global citizenship that Scouting offers you first hand. In recent years, Scouting has put young people at the heart of its communications work and has helped them to speak about their experiences to print, broadcast and online journalists.

Young people who take part in these courses will learn the skills and confidence to advocate for Scouting whether its encouraging adults to volunteer, other young people to join or raising the profile of Scouting in their community. They are the young people who will speak up for Scouting.

Celebration Evening for All Adults

All adults involved in Scouting around Berkshire are invited to join us for an evening of celebration and looking forward on Tuesday 5th July at the Berkshire College of Agriculture near Maidenhead. More details will be published shortly, but for now make sure you and your teams have the date in your diary for a great evening out!

Camp in Warwick Castle

Camp in the Grounds of Warwick Castle enjoy the surroundings and experience a range of activity based challenges on the Saturday Evening After tents have been packed away and breakfast on the Sunday morning enjoy an escorted tour of the Kingmaker, The Great Hall and State Rooms before the general public arrive. Then the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the facilities. £35 Per Person includes evening meal, breakfast and entry to the Castle. More information...

Module 20 - Administration

Hi Andy and David,

I hope that you are both still okay for tomorrow's module 20 - due to cancellations, there are only going to be the two of you attending, but I still want to carry on, as we can use it as an open workshop about your administration responsibilities.

The doors are due to open at 7.15 for a 7.30 pm start - I may be arriving a few minutes after 7.15, due to the official opening of our new offices at work, but please just wait at the gates and I will be there as soon as I can, definitely before 7.30!

Dragon Boat Regatta

Enjoy a team building afternoon on the Thames at Wokingham Waterside Centre with your unit and friends.

The Centre is running a Dragon Boat Regatta especially for Berkshire Scouts afternoon of Sunday the 12th of June. This is a fun event with prizes for teams of 11 Cubs, Scouts, Explorers or Scout Network/leaders. No previous experience or special equipment is needed as the Centre will provide the boats, buoyancy aids, qualified helms, instruction etc. For further details including how to enter Click Here.

Young people needed to tell the world about Scouting

The Scout Association is co-ordinating courses around the UK, to give young people the skills to talk about their experiences to a wide variety of audiences. Attendees will gain the confidence to encourage young people to join, adults to volunteer, and raise the profile of Scouting in their community, as well as learning skills including; how to talk to journalists, giving radio interviews, giving effective presentations, supporting a campaign and direct lobbying. Please distribute the course flyer and booking form to any young people that would be suitable for the course, or complete the form on their behalf.

YouScout

The views of our youth members are a powerful way of influencing the media, government and decision makers. By canvassing young people via a short poll on key issues, Scouts will be able to comment on topics that affect young people. Please ask members aged between 13 and 25 to fill in a short questionnaire.

Passionate Volunteer Wanted for WINGS2014 Director

WINGS2009 was a fantastic success, enjoyed by over 6,000 people from 40 countries at Windsor Great Park.

We now turn our attention to WINGS2014 and invite you to register your interest for this key role:

• Lead and develop the Vision for WINGS2014.

• Manage the Implementation Team to provide an Exceptional Showcase for Girlguiding and Scouting throughout Berkshire, the UK and Internationally.

• Previous experience or involvement with organising large scale events is highly desirable.

Nominations sought for County Chairman

Nigel Coopey will shortly complete his term as County Chairman and is intending to step down following the County Annual General Meeting in July 2011.

Nominations (note that self-nomination is also encouraged) are sought for the role. Please give consideration to people with whom you work in Scouting, at your workplace, or in the wider community, to identify anyone (male or female and need not be current or previous members of Scouting) who you believe has the qualities to be the County Chairman. At this stage it is important to draw up a list with as wide a cross section of people as possible, so when considering a possible candidate please do not compare them against any previous County Chairman.

Please note that in order to ensure confidentiality, and prevent building up false hopes, nominations should be submitted without approaching the individual concerned.
