The Mount Challenge weekend may involve a short journey involving simple navigation- so perhaps now is the time to brush up on a few basic skills, setting a map using the features around you or using a compass and identifying the basic symbols on a map.

• Make sure you are familiar with the simple operations of setting a map
• Make sure you are familiar with basic map symbols, can you tell the difference between a river and a motorway?
• What does a footpath look like on a map?
• Bring a compass and do not lose it.
• Bring a plastic bag to put your map in case it rains - best of all get a map case.
• Remember it is OK to use the map and compass to find your way.
