Fin'08 Expedition a great success

On the Evening of 21st August the Fin’08 expedition returned home following a highly successful expedition. The group made up of 22 Explorer Scouts, Network Members and Adult Leaders from 3 Berkshire Districts all arrived safely home with a great sense of achievement. During the expedition they had 2 days of joint activities with representatives of the Finnish Scouts who also provided a great deal of support for the event.

The expedition then moved to the Mantyharju area of Finland for 5 days in this beautiful Lakeland setting for our awards expeditions. By the time they moved on to Espoo 6 Explorer Scouts had achieved their Chief Scouts Diamond Award and D of E Silver Expedition section on foot. 4 Network Members completed a hiking expedition and a further 4 a cycling expedition all successfully completing this section of their Queens Scout and D of E Gold Awards.

For our last 2 days the expedition was based at the Finish Scouts Cabin in the National Park near Espoo.  On one day the expedition  travelled back into Helsinki to complete a mini explorer belt ‘the wolf woggle challenge’. They were joined for this day by a potential new member of the association. 17 year old Fred was working on placement at the British Embassy and decided to join in and get to know some of the Explorer Scouts from our contingent. As a result Fred along with the rest of his team became the winning team. The trip concluded with an awards dinner at a Helsinki restaurant where the expedition members were treated to Parsnip Soup and Reindeer Sizzle. They were joined this evening by their hosts from Finland and also Lt Col Mike Barker from the British Embassy who presented all the participants with a specially created souvenir certificate of achievement for their expeditions.

On behalf of the entire contingent sincere thanks to the Finnish Scouts, the British Embassy and The Rotary Club of Slough without whose help the immense achievement and success of the expedition may not have been possible.

Jamboree on the Air

The Jamboree on the Air takes place annually in October  in which about 500,000 Scouts all over the world make contact with each other by means of amateur radio. It is a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared, thus contributing to the world nature of Scouting. JOTA will be taking part throughout the world so this is a great opportunity for an international experience. more

Jamboree on the Internet

The Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) takes place annual in October.  If you can organise internet access you can take part. JOTI is an annual event when Scouts make contact with each other by means of the Internet and this means all over the world. It is a great Jamboree experience during which you can exchange ideas and experiences are shared. JOTI is a world-wide event mainly for Scouting groups in all youth programme sections, although members may participate individually.  All you need is internet access  - you can make contact via web browser, email or a chat room (IRC) - all is freely available. It is a great international experience. more
