Fundraising for Project Africa

Project Africa is about encouraging all Berkshire Scouts to engage in young people supporting young people (helping others). It is hoped that you and your Section/Group/Unit will help raise the funds to make a difference to the lives of school children and Scouts in Uganda.

See also the Project Africa main page for details about the whole project – including a link to the Global Awareness Programme (GAP).

The three main areas for fundraising, with targets and amount raised, are shown below. Please see below for details about the specific projects and how you can help with fundraising.

Sponsorship forms

Separate sponsorship forms for individual and for community project fundraising are now available for downloading from the Project Africa main page.

It is important when engaged in fundraising that it is clear if the money being raised is for individual support or for supporting the community projects.

Money for the community projects should be sent to the County Administrator (see below for details) with the cheque payable to Berkshire County Scout Council. Please write clearly on the back of the cheque the money is for community projects and also indicate if the money is to be donated specifically for chickens, buildings, or camping equipment.

Thank you!

1 Buildings

The main building projects will take place at the Bukeka Children's Centre which is a short drive from Mityana in central Uganda (west of Kampala).

The first project is to build a Chicken House to provide a sustainable source of food and income for the school (see also 2 Chickens below). Plans for the Chicken House are already in place and £14,250 is required to fund the materials and initial work by local builders so that Berkshire Scouts travelling to Uganda in 2011 can help complete the Chicken House.

The second building project to be undertaken by Berkshire Scouts in Uganda in 2011 is to replace the tumbled down school kitchen at the Bukeka Children's Centre (shown in the picture opposite). £6,000 is required for this project.

Berkshire Scouts will also be working on projects at the Kavule School for the Deaf which is situated just outside Mbale in eastern Uganda. The main project at this special school is to add and replace guttering to all buildings to harvest rainwater. The second project is to add a second staff wash room so male and female staff have some privacy. It is estimated that £3,000 will cover the costs of the work at this special school for deaf children.

2 Chickens

Project Africa would like Berkshire Scouts to sponsor approximately 1,000 chickens for the new Chicken House (see 1 above) at the Bukeka Children's Centre.

It costs approximately £8 to purchase and sponsor a chicken (including it’s transportation from Kampala to Mityana; inoculations to keep it healthy; chicken feed; and charcoal for the heaters to keep the young chicks warm through the nights to help them grow to egg-laying hens). The eggs will be used to feed the school children and to sell locally to support  costs at the school – a truly sustainable community project.

It would be great to see Berkshire Beaver Scout Colonies and Cub Scout Packs raising funds to sponsor approximately 1,000 chickens. Of course, sponsorship from any age, Section, or Unit will be most welcome!

A special certificate/receipt will be sent to all Sections that provide funds.

3 Camping equipment

The third fundraising project is to sponsor the purchase of camping equipment that can be used by Berkshire Scouts whilst working in Uganda and then left behind for use by local Scouting.

Obviously, it will be better to purchase equipment locally so it can be replaced or repaired by local Scouts. It is estimated that approximately £6,000 will be required to purchase the camping equipment.

Fundraising

From the above information it can be seen the full fundraising target is approximately £38,000–£41,000. Proceeds from this target would make a huge difference to the lives of hundreds of young people at the two schools in Uganda as well as supporting local Scouting.

Sections/Groups/Units can obviously raise the money in a way that fits their programme. However, a visit to the Global Awareness Programme web page gives some fundraising ideas and activities which also introduce Berkshire Scouts to the lives of young people in Eastern Africa and Uganda in particular. Simply tick the Fundraising box on the programme resource selection page.

If your Section/Group/Unit is looking for a local charity to donate collections or pass on other monies then Project Africa is a great opportunity to support Berkshire Scouts supporting young people in Uganda.

Cheques should be made payable to Berkshire County Scout Council with Project Africa and your Section/Group/Unit written on the back. In return, the Section/Unit will receive a certificate/receipt and the Section/Group/Unit name will be added to the Sponsor list below.

Please send cheques (payable Berkshire County Scout Council) to:
