Windsor and Eton District Centenary Camp

Glorious sunshine greeted the campers at the Windsor and Eton District Centenary Camp at Bears Rails over the weekend 6/7/8 July. Saturday centered on those popular activities such as fires and making twists, followed by a grand Camp Fire with some great sing-alongs. Sunday was the grand activity day with something for everyone

Rupert Allison had some of historical Scouting Collection on show and with quite a few former Scouts there were many reminiscences to recall.

Seven Elevens Start Centenary Year with their Scout Promise

Central Windsor Scouts celebrated the New Year by welcoming seven young people as new members of their Scout Troop, based in Green Lane, Windsor. At the stroke of midnight, five girls and two boys – all eleven years old - each made their Scout Promise and became the first Scouts in the country to be invested in 2007, the hundredth year of the Scout Movement.

After their investiture ceremony, the new members joined the rest of the Troop for a party and sleepover. In the morning, they cooked up a full English breakfast and played ball games in a nearby park. Will said, “It was a brilliant investiture”, Katie thought it was a good experience and Hannah said it was exciting to play so many games and stay up until 3:30 in the morning!

The Scout Troop has an exciting programme for 2007 which includes “Splashdown”, a District celebration at Windsor Leisure Centre on 3 March. While many of the Scouts will be away on summer camp in the last week of July, Nick Hyett (Young Leader) will attend the 21st World Scout Jamboree to join 40,000 other Scouts from 216 countries for 12 days of adventure, challenge and international friendship.

Derek Twine thanks Windsor and Eton

Derek Twine, Chief Executive of The Scout Association, was guest speaker at the recent Windsor & Eton District Scout Council Annual General Meeting which was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Windsor.

Derek thanked Windsor and Eton District for their year on year contributions to the success of the National St Georges Service at Windsor Castle. He looked forward to the event in 2007 when there would be a strong international flavour. He started his presentation with some inspiring stories of how Scouting had changed the lives of young people and their communities in Russia, Rwanda and Northern Ireland.  He emphasised the difference that Scouting had and continues to make in communities across the UK.  He complimented Windsor & Eton on the growth in the number of Cub Scouts and in the proportion of female members and related this to similar patterns of growth in the numbers of young people who were attracted to Scouting across the UK.

The Worshipful the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Eric Wiles, thanked the Adult Volunteers in Windsor who were contributing greatly to the community and were very much valued.

The meeting elected Sandra Hopkins as Chair, Jenny Gudgeon as Secretary and Brian Betts as Treasurer for 2005-6. The Chair and the District Commissioner thanked the retiring President Roland Wiseman and presented him with a sun dial to mark his long service to Scouting in the District.  The meeting welcomed the new District President John Gladman to his role.

The are also opportunities to help at Group level and in the District in 'management' roles. Tasks at these levels include finance; administration; fund-raising; taking care of equipment; and so on.

Adults in Scouting have fun and are well supported with training and through District and County programme teams.
