Pang Valley District Scout Activity Camp 2008

7 Cubs, 100 Scouts, 15 Explorer Scouts and 2 Young Leaders, as well as 42 leaders and helpers, enjoyed an eventful weekend at Rushall Farm over the weekend of 27-29th June at the annual Scout Activity camp. The troops were split into mixed teams; each team named after a famous English engineer or inventor. The teams then had to complete a number of activities including the climbing tower, rifle shooting, archery, bivouacking, football, volley ball, woggle making, cooking in ‘Dutch ovens’, a laser-clamber test and the famous trek cart race. The winning team was Brunel with 603 points.

In addition the patrol leader of each of the teams competed for the William Palmer Award. Congratulations to Ben Drew who demonstrated clear scouting and leadership qualities throughout the weekend.

Thanks to all the leaders, fellowship and parents who made the weekend a success.

1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scout Group Launched

Pang Valley has a brand new Scout Group formed on 1 March 2008 in the form of 1st Burghfield and Sulhamstead Scout Group.  St Mary's in Burghfield was packed with young people, adult leaders, parents and supporters to see the dedication of the new flags and the presentation of scarves for the new Group.

The photo shows members of the New Group complete with new flags and new scarves. The old scarves are on their way to Scouts in Kenya. A collection was also held to help support Scouting Kenya.

Simon Pickett, the Group Scout Leader introduced the theme of the afternoon which was friendship by recounting the friends he had continued to make since being a Cub Scout.

Everyone present helped make a friendship chain (shown in photo) which contained the names of everyone present.

Ian Shenton, District Commissioner for Pang Valley District congratulated and thanked the Adult Leaders and other volunteers in the two previous groups for all the work they had done to make this launch such a success.

After the service the Group moved on a party at Willink School.

The Group has ~ 200 members and you can check them, out at the Group website www.burghfieldandsulhamstead.org.uk

Adults in Pang Valley

There are many opportunities for adults to enjoy and support Scouting. Working directly with young people in the Sections includes being a Leader; an Assistant Leader; Colony, Pack or Troop Assistant and so on.

The are also opportunities to help at Group level and in the District in 'management' roles. Tasks at these levels include finance; administration; fund-raising; taking care of equipment; and so on.

Adults in Scouting have fun and are well supported with training and through District and County programme teams.

For further details on how to support Scouting in this District you should contact the Pang Valley District Commissioner or follow these links
