Reading Central District

This District supports Scouting for young people aged 6 to 25 in east Reading; north Reading; Caversham; Southcote; Whitley; Spencers Wood; and the surrounding area.

Reading Scouts launch the Oxford Road Project

1st Reading (YMCA) Scout Group celebrate a centenary

Current and past members of 1st Reading (YMCA) Scout Group gathered on the 19 February to mark the  100 years of challenge, adventure and friendship since the Group was formed.

The Group was founded on the 19th. February 1908 and was announced in the "Berkshire Chronicle," and the "Reading Mercury," on Saturday 22nd. February 1908. The Scoutmaster at that time did not register the Group until 1909. He didn't think Scouting was going to last!

Amongst the guests were the Mayoress of Reading, Mrs. Dorothy Maskell, Sir William & Lady Benyon, Sir Anthony & Lady Durrant, Mr. Rob Wilson MP, Lt.Cdr. David Griffiths RN Staff Officer Scouts, Cdr. Julian Wyatt RN, 1st Reading Group President Mr. Harry Beckett and members of the District Team.

Harry (lower photo) has seen all but 16 of those 100 magic yearsand maintains an active interest in the Group.

Cdr. Julian Wyatt was presented with the uniform that he had worn as a member of the Troop & like a good Scout, he joined in the fun, by wearing it and joining his old patrol!

The Group are planning 100 mile paddle during the Summer, to help their appeal to achieve the target of re-building their boathouse, which was burnt down in what the fire-fighters described as a suspicious fire.

The Group will be holding a Grand Party for all the Group, Parents and Supporters later this year.

73rd Reading (Park) Scout Group celebrates 75 years of Scouting

73rd Reading (Park) Scout Group celebrated 75 years of continuous Scouting at Park as well as 100 years of Scouting and 100 years of Park United Reformed Church.  The photos show some of the current Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts and the Adult Leadership Team.  Massive congratulations to everyone associated with Park for providing so much fabulous Scouting.

Scouting for 14 to 18 young men and women is based in local Explorer Scout Units. There are three such units in the Reading Central District

Scouting for 18 to 25 men and women is based in the Scout Network which is coordinated on a County-wide basis.

Adults in Reading Central

There are many opportunities for adults to enjoy and support Scouting. Working directly with young people in the Sections includes being a Leader; an Assistant Leader; Colony, Pack or Troop Assistant and so on.

The are also opportunities to help at Group level and in the District in 'management' roles. Tasks at these levels include finance; administration; fund-raising; taking care of equipment; and so on.

Adults in Scouting have fun and are well supported with training and through District and County programme teams.

Support for Adults in Reading Central

All Adults in Scouting are supported by both District and County-based Support Teams and by a widely respected training programme which can lead to a qualification from the National Open College Network.

Beaver Fun Day Badge Competition

Reading Central District have run a competition for their  Beaver Scout Fun Day Badge. The competition was won by a Beaver Scout from 3rd Reading Wild Wood Colony.

The photo shows Barry Johnson ADC Beaver Scouts presenting a £10.00 gift voucher to the Beaver Scout with the winning entry at a colony meeting.

There were 47 entries and each beaver Scout was presented with a certificate for taking part.
