On 18 November, Wokingham District Cub Scouts held their first
ever District Cub Scout Cooking Competition. Four Packs took part,
one each from Winnersh and Emmbrook and both Woosehills Hawks and
Kestrels. They had to make their own sausages with the ingredients
provided. The competition was fierce as they were marked on their
hygiene, health and safety and the taste of the end product. The
inventiveness of the sausages ranged from Rosemary and Red Pepper to
Apple and sage, and then they had to prepare their vegetables and
their fruit salad.
Well done to all who took part, but particular congratulations to
1st Emmbrook Tigers (photo left) who walked away with the biggest
Wooden Spoon you have ever seen, hopefully they will go on to the
county event. A big thank you must go to Akela's Andrew and Fiona of 1st
Woosehill for organising this event and I hope there will be many
more. Report and Photos from Kaye Gambles (Parent helper 1st Emmbrook) Teams
of 3 cubs representing ten districts across the County came together
at Central Windsor HQ to complete for the County Cub Quiz trophy.
Each team took part in activities in three themed bases. Each base
tested their skills including observation, smell, taste, dexterity,
speed and knowledge. It was a fun afternoon with cubs trying their
hand at cross bow shooting (only toy ones), diving into custard,
listening to Disney music (guessing the tune) and taking part in a
inter-active multi choice quiz. The final results where very close with every team receiving
special praise and a certificate at the award ceremony the top three
teams were: 1st place – 1st Woolhampton, Taceham Hundred – 152 points 2nd place – 1st Eton Wick, Windsor & Eton – 142 points 3rd place – 1st Britwell, Slough – 132 points The photo shows the winning team from 1st Woolhampton Team with
the trophy. Special thanks go to Kerry Linton for putting together a well
organised, varied and challenging contest. Also thanks to all the
adults who helped out on the day and for those who gave up their
time to get the Cubs to Windsor. All the cubs who took part said
that they had a great time and look forward to next years. We are looking forward to visiting Taceham Hundred District for
next year’s event. The 2007 County Cub Scout Cooking Competition was held in February at the 12th Windsor Scouts HQ. The teams quickly got down
to work cooking chicken, stir fried vegetables followed by some
delightful “concoctions” of apple, dried fruit, digestive biscuits and
custard. The teams, of three cubs, were not only judged on the
preparation of the food supplied but also there presentation, table
layout and menus.
Hygiene was very important and once the judge had tasted the food and the
cubs had all sat down and eaten their own handy work washing up and
tidying away had to be done! The afternoon ended with some games and with
the arrival of Mums and Dads the presentation of certificates to all who
took part and the “new” trophy to the winners. The photograph shows the
winning team from 1st St Sebastian’s, South Berkshire in the middle with
Central Windsor’s 4th Pack and 1st Cold Ash from Taceham Hundred either
side. The competition was excellently judged by Peter Rowden who enjoyed
a taste of all the meals giving some useful tips to the teams along the
way. A special thanks to Tolly for a fantastically run event and to the
leaders for giving up their time to be with their teams. Everyone, young
people and adults, had a great afternoon and all the cubs who took part
were a credit to our section. I’m looking forward to next year’s event. Ian May ACC (Cub Scouts) 79th Reading Comanche Cub Pack met The Chief Scout - Peter Duncan - at
the opening night of his Pantomine in Oxford. On Sunday 24th September the
sun shone as over 700 Cub Scouts from across Berkshire gathered at
Chalfont Heights to celebrate 90 years of Cubbing with an activity
day. The day started wet but at 10.00hrs the party started with a County Grand Howl led by
John Shortland. The Cub Scouts then
tried their hands at climbing, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting,
go carts, circus skills, inflatable table top football, basket ball,
jousting and sumo wrestling. They were able to ride around the site
on Stevenage Scouts train stopping of at the Bird man with his owl
and falcon that the cubs could hold, and also visit the hands on
farm animals and have a go at the craft based activities. The sun continued to shine all day, and after a picnic lunch the
Cubs were entertained by two clowns from Circus Scene who persuaded
a cub and a leader to help in the show, before the activity bases
opened for another session of fun before a final County Grand Howl
led by John Shortland and on to the coaches for home. We had a lot of help from Explorer Scouts, Adult Leaders and
Fellowships across Berkshire and without their help the day would
not have been such a great success a BIG THANK YOU to them all.
Nobody
could remember there having been a dead heat in the Cub Scout Quiz,
but the County’s Cub Scouts beat even that with a three way tie in a
close fought contest. The photograph shows the three winning
teams, from Pang Valley, South East Berks and Wokingham sharing the
trophy. The County Cub Scouts Quiz attracted 8 teams, each
representing a different Districts. It was held in the headquarters
of last year’s winners, 1st Wokingham and was organised by John
Shortland. There were all sorts of fun rounds as well as a
real quiz with questions on Scouting and Sport, not to mention
Science and Nature. The other rounds included identifying the
flavour of crisps, fire lighting, building the tallest tower from
Duplo bricks, not to mention recognising famous places and naming so
celebrities. Many thanks to all who made it possible and
congratulations to those who took part. Photo and report Colin Smith .
Wokingham
District Cooking Competition

The
standard of the cooking was very high but one team stood out for
their teamwork. Their sausages were not the best in flavour although
still very edible, but they all worked together to keep the area
tidy and clean and they discussed everything with no one taking
over, this included the decoration of their table, as well as the
less interesting bit of washing up!! County Cub Quiz
