Centenary Year in Berkshire launched with 8 new Scouts on the stroke of Midnight

As the bell struck to welcome the New Year at two separate ceremonies in Windsor and West Berkshire,  8 young people  became the very first new members of the Scout Section in this Centenary Year.

4th Newbury (St Johns) Scout Troop from Kennet District held a winter camp which involved camping out over the New Year Weekend. They cooked and looked after themselves and enjoyed an adventure hike, rifle shooting and building chairs, traditional style. For one of them Luke, the highlight of the weekend was his investiture as a Scout at the stroke of midnight, to become one of the very first new Scouts in Berkshire and the whole of the UK. The photo shows Luke with his friends receiving a certificate to mark the occasion from Hamish Stout, County Commissioner. Bruce, the Scout Leader of 4th Newbury said "We came up with idea after Summer Camp, it is a great way to launch the Centenary in our Group".

At the same time, Katie, Hannah, Will, Kate, Sophie, Martin and Lily  were being invested as Scouts in the Central Windsor Scout Group by making the Scout Promise.  Peter Archibald, the Scout Leader said "The young people are all 11 years old and are moving on from  the 4th Windsor and 6th Windsor Cub Scout Packs both in the Central Windsor Group. Their Akela will be taking part in the investiture".  Each received a signed certificate from the County Commissioner to mark the occasion. The photo shows the intrepid seven planning their next adventure.

Hamish Stout, County Commissioner for Berkshire said "What a great way to start the Centenary Year in Berkshire and across the UK! This is a year of adventure, international friendship and an opportunity to change the world for good.  Over 7,000 young people and adult volunteers in Berkshire will join with 28 million Scouts world-wide to celebrate this fabulous year and to look forward to the future with real hope for a better world".
