Centenary Celebration
The Royal Berkshire Conference Centre was packed out with Guests, Adult Volunteers and Friends from across Berkshire to celebrate the Centenary of Scouting. Mayors and MPs, Educators and Community Leaders were amongst the many guests who were escorted by Explorer Scouts from Loddon District to the activity displays showing just what Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network do. They found it was all adventure, challenge and fun.
The County Commissioner, Hamish Stout presented Photo of the Year Awards to Alan Foord and Martin Lang. Presentations were also made to 1st Twyford for their resolve and enthusiasm in replacing their Headquarters destroyed by fire whilst maintaining a high quality programme July 2007; Studio Lift for their support over recent years with the website, the Annual review and Banners and Flags; The Activity Team for the organisation of a series of highly successful international expeditions; South Berkshire District for the Scout Factor Series; Slough Scout Network for the expedition to Mafeking; Mick Stock to mark the occasion of being awarded an MBE.
The Lord Lieutenant and President of Berkshire Scouts, Philip Wroughton said "Scouting in Berkshire is in a healthy state with numbers strong propelled in to the next 100 year with enery and enthusiasm. Sincere thanks nn behalf of parents, teachers and young people for everything you do."
Mike Edwards Head teacher of New Town Primary School in Reading recalled his days as a Scout and said "Scouting is a powerful movement for good". MP for Reading East, Rob Wilson said "Eleven of the Twelve people who had walked on the Moon were Scouts". He wondered how the twelvth one had go there. He congratulated the Adult Volunteers sho made in possible and said they should all be very proud of the Scouting Movement.
Wayne Bulpitt, shortly to be Chief Commissioner and currently Chair of the Committee of the Council said what a fantastic year 2007 had been so far with more to come.
